How do guys subtly test the waters before asking someone out?

I see if she's willing to engage in conversation. If she's not, then she's not interested. If she does engage, then maybe she's interested, maybe not. But I feel safe to ask, or to just give her my number.

that's actually kind of how it happened with my ex, lol...

for the first hour or so, I was talking with this girl I already knew, and we were hanging out but that was all... and also, this other girl I didn't know, I met her there and we only talked for around 10 minutes, and similarly... not really a sparkling interest lol

but then, this girl came out of nowhere... and once we started to talk, we just kept that up... talking and hanging out at that party, for about six hours

so, I guess... if she had not been there that day/night... I would have probably ended up just hanging out and talking/meeting other people there, just casually... but not more eventful than that

I just observe and try and see if she is a good fit personality wise. I'm not someone who slowly submerges myself in a pool to adjust to the temperature. When I make the decision, I jump in.
