My top three worst and best things about working at Dollar General

Hello everyone, I am getting ready to move to a new job at a grocery store as a overnight stocker. However, I am leaving Dollar General, a store I have been employed at for almost a year. In that year I have seen and experienced a lot that has changed the way I see customer service, corporations, and people. Just to warn you, some of the stuff I may say can come off as mean, but it's my experience and I get not everyone has the same experience.

Best:

1. The Customers.

I really had some regulars who come in often who are pretty cool. Most of them understand the store and how things are. They also keep us in business so the good customers are the ones who are faithful and know us by name.

2. Weekly pay.

We do get paid every week which is a nice touch

3. The location

It's only a mile and half from my house, so i can walk there in half an hour.

Worst:

1. You are doing the job of 3 staff members in one

You are expected to run freight, stock and cashier all at almost the same time, and customers come one right after another to the checkout queue in less than 2 minutes.

2. Thieves

We had a hell of a lot of shoplifters in our store, and lots of open packages lying around and hidden, but we can't confront or stop them at the door.

3. Coupon Karen's

These people are soooo insistent on using their coupon no matter how miniscule the savings are, they will get upset if it does not take their 5o cents off gain laundry detergent (we have a big deal with Procter and Gamble on coupons for their brands, it's like they sol out to the devil)

The biggest thing I hate most of all is Corporate. Oh boy, do I have stuff to say. They set a budget for so many hours a week for employee, which is usually less than 15 hrs., That doesn't pay bills to me. Second thing is, the store manager expects a lot to get done, that most times cannot unless you have adequate staffing, Stocking and running register makes these duties difficult especially on Friday and Saturday Nights. Third thing is I hated how everyone treated my coworker when she was going through mental breakdowns. They gave her 3 days off, but that still didn't fix her breakdowns.

I started there at $10 per hour, and 10 months later, still no performance reviews or even a miniscule raise which at other jobs I got a raise after 30 days or 90 days.

Needless to say, I didn't extremely ate it, but it could have been better.
