I've been working in retail for 2 months now after working in food management for 3 years. My short time in retail and there are already things that irritate me that I wish people were more conscious of. I get that you may not be aware of these so I don't get mad at the customer, it just gets old.
'You don't remember me? I was just here two weeks ago!'
Yes you may have been, but do you realize I work 35+hours a week and see literally hundreds if not thousands of faces a week???
I do remember some customers that stick out to me, and do try to remember people and will start to remember my regulars. But don't expect that to happen right away.
'WOW! That's expensive! Can I use your employee discount? Ha!'
Yes we're a home decor company. Expect things to get pricey. Learn how to do math and stop trying to make lame jokes. I literally hear this line at least 3-4 times a day. It gets old.
'Oh yea I just printed that this morning! Ha!'

This is one I've heard by far the most from working in food management, and in retail. As soon as I pull out my counterfeit pen and hold the bill against the light, 99% of the time someone will make the above comment. And I laugh it off and make them thing they're funny... But again, I literally hear this so much... Please....don't. Just don't.
'Oh! Does that mean it's free if there's no price tag?'
Again people, not funny. I know you're trying but I hear this as soon as I start looking for the item on our website for a price. I know you're joking but still, it really does get old.
Get off your phone!!!

This will annoy anyone when you go out, either at a restaurant, retail, or somewhere else. Stop trying to text or talk on the phone and pay. Or even while I'm ringing you up. No one around you wants to hear about your personal life and how your father freaks out about everything.
I'm not your personal shopper
This one is less annoying but still a little bit. It also doesn't happen in all retail jobs, but as I work for a home decor company, it happens a lot. Customers will ask me to help them pick stuff out and go around the store with them, picking out furniture and such.
This is a hard one for me because I love doing this and interacting with my customers. And I will do this if I don't have a lot to do that day. But usually I do. I'm a manager in training and have a department I'm in charge of to maintain. I can't maintain it or help other customers if I'm with you for 2 hours. Even my staff that aren't in charge of departments, they still have duties assigned to them and side work that needs to be done.
Don't get me wrong guys, I love my job and getting to be personable and talk with my customers. I'll talk and make conversation at check out or as their shopping and I pass them. I really don't mind it, but there are things that get annoying and overdone like what I've mentioned above. I could keep going but I'll stop here haha.
This last image has absolutely nothing to do with this, I just thought it was funny and so relatable.... accept I'm the manager who gets called.

As you go out this weekend, keep this in mind with your cashier's or retail workers please! π
