What would you prefer as a 28 year old?

Own a paid off house but live in a boring area (ex. Texan suburbs)

Rent forever but live in a cool area (ex. Munich, Seattle)

Tough choice. I now live in a rather boring and quiet neighborhood although I can drive around 45 mins to an exciting downtown area. Part of what got me to move to the boring neighborhood though is that I couldn't afford a house in central Tokyo (the smallest ones tend to cost $500,000+ USD) and wanted to marry and settle down and build a family with my wife. When single, I much preferred the apartment.

I went with A since I might still be able to spend some time in cool and fun places here and there. I'd rather own a house at some point than never at all.

Paid off house. You can always still live in another area (though Seattle sure as hell wouldn't count; Seattle sucks), rent the house back home out to college kids or something, and make enough money to live in the cool area for free.

If you own a place, you can cash out the increased value every 5 years, have plenty of money to go to all the "cool" places and rent your place out on Airbnb while you're not there.

🤷🏼‍♂️ I don't know, never been there. The most important part is cashing out the increased value every 5 years (5-10% per year average) or whenever the market is exceptionally high. You get a higher appraisal, borrow from the bank against that (interest obviously is a factor, but if you use half to make some renovations to increase the value and the rest to travel, it more than pays for itself)

Why would anyone actually want to live in Seattle? You'd have to be crazy (or a loony leftie, which is pretty much the same thing) to want to live there.

Yeah pretty much. But for me the main reason I don’t like it is that it’s too white. Segregation is big and everything is so fake and oblivious to how racist they actually are.
