Does this make me a jerk - going after the same job as someone who's been unemployed since the pandemic started?

If a new position opens at a company there will be competition to fill it. Also being afraid to compete or put yourself forward as a qualified candidate is self sabotage. Because you just removed any chance of you moving into the new position. That also applies to raises and promotions within the department you already work in. You need to be willing to compete, sell yourself to your boss and ask for a raise or other benefits. Because if are afraid to do so you are pretty much creating a situation where you will end up working in the same entry level position and not getting a raise or a extremely low raise. When the people around you move up and are making more money an hour then you are.
Also I'll flat out say it my goal is to leave people behind at my work place. I'm going to put 110% or more in. I'm going to ensure that my quality of work is constantly of a high quality. I'll also work extra hours when needed. Because if a new job opens in a different department or they need to promote someone in my current department, my name is as close to the top of the list as it can get. So if people have an issue with me getting a promotion or a bigger raise then them that's on them. Because my goal is to out work them and they where the ones that didn't put in enough effort to stop me from doing so.
How dare you provide and take care of yourself lol. You also eat when people are starving on the other side of the world. And lots of other things. It's not YOUR fault they are unemployed, or if you are chosen instead of them. It's nice of you to care enough to think about that, but most people wouldn't give you a second thought if it was reversed. Got to look after yourself.
it's not like you're going out of your way to sabotage them (i hope), you're both competing for the same job on equal standing even if you are more experienced, it would make me feel bad too I guess though
Not a jerk. It's a job opening. Competition is natural.

Not at all. It's your employer's decision, and it's not really a contest. If you declared that you didn't want a promotion, there's no guarantee they would promote him instead.
Jerk? Not at all. Win or lose, he will still have a job. Good luck.
A jerk? No it's make you clever going up against someone who has little chance of getting it!
One is never a jerk for trying to advance themselves with a new job or promotion.
It is not your duty to burn so that others are warm.
If you are a better candidate you would be a jerk for not going for the job. I don't care how long they been unemployed, I will never hire someone as a nurse if they can't nurse, that would get people killed
No, it's survival of the fittest. Fuck em! Take what's yours!
