I got a job interview next Wednesday but I am still employed. I just took a sick day so I can't do it next week.

Tell your boss you have a short appointment. No other details. If he presses, say it's personal. You don't need to give him details. Worst case, say it's medical (especially if your company doesn't ask for dr notes).

Absolute worst case, call in sick that morning/afternoon.

If you think your boss will understand, you can say it's for an interview, but it's up to you if you think that's safe. Bad bosses are known to fire employees for even considering working elsewhere. Hopefully yours isn't one of those.

Explain to the interviewer that you have a job and ask is there a time they can interview you before or after work... or even on a lunch break (most interviews can be done via zoom or over the phone now).

Worse case, ask to come into your current job late, OR clock out a little early and do the interview then. There is NO reason to tell your current job you have an interview- as a matter of fact, never do that!

    Good luck to you~

Should I just say I have a follow up appointment about my case from yesterday?

You can, but your job might get nosy and ask for details.
Is there anyway to interview before or after your job?

Dang. Then go with the follow up appt. It's... not ideal, as your current job might start to ask questions about what's going on, but try to keep your story straight.
Also keep in mind the job you're interviewing for might call your current job to ask about you and your work history- so that will tip off your current job you're job hunting.

Hence why I warn you to be careful lying about why you're taking off.

I thought employers only ask references when you are successful in the job

If were recently scheduled then you may contact the interviewer and ask if interview can be moved out do to current employer complications. If they are interested in you... and you say that correctly they will appreciate you balancing both so that you are right in your current obligations.

The best thing for you right now is to take care of yourself. It'll give you more energy and clarity when you go back to work.

Is it a job you really want? If so, don't miss the interview. Go for it.

There is no way for you to leave work for a short period of time? Can you do a online meeting for the interview,? Can you reschedule?
