Twitter was massively bloated and most employees did almost nothing all day long.

Tesla has 150 people in their A. I. team, and that's a massively more difficult problem to deal with than developing Twitter (which has a number of clones built by teams of a dozen developers). Twitter is STILL overstaffed after losing 90% of their employees, but now the ones who have been doing most of the work will now have fewer hurdles and distractions and will get more done.

Elon has long understood that a company that is to do great work has to be lean and mean - when you have rooms of employees who are spending weeks picking paint colors, lunch menus, and entertainment options, you have far too many people and are wasting a lot of money.

Twitter was losing $4M a day, and the median salary was $156,000 (not counting benefits, which were substantial), and that's a crazy amount of money for employees that added no value to the company.

Fools, never quit until you've another job lined up. This is what businesses prefer, rather than fire people and have to pay out redundancy payments you get them to quit which saves them big money. This has been coming for a while now. It was inevitable that the tech industry bubble would burst.

Tech companies has given their employees unprecedented rich benefits and pay and expected too little in return. These employers have tried so hard to compete with each other for the best talent that they've overextended themselves and created an unsustainable bubble of a very overcompensated but underworked workforce who are the embodiment of the entitled and narcissistic Millennial generation.

What's next for them? The painful slap in the face that is reality. They will now be forced to adjust their attitudes and lifestyle to live in the real world.

I think those people are going to find that their contract allows the company to terminate their employment at any time, as long as they are given a severance. 60 days severance is typically required, and Elon is giving 90 days. When those workers bring their contract to a lawyer, they're going to hear some bad news.
