The truth is you can't know what it means. If you are an internal candidate and it was suggested that you apply for the position, you are likely the winner. If you are internal and have just been granted an interview, it's likely they are just being courteous and giving you an interview. If you are external, the question is, are you competing with internal.
Competing with internal. However a manager in the company who I’ve worked for before rang up the hiring manager and mentioned me. He was told that I’ve been shortlisted. He then gave a good reference for me. And the hiring manager said “ok I’ll see what I can do”.
Competing with internal is a tough road. Good luck.

Internal will always trump external.

Because internal candidates can actively lobby for the job from day one and their work performance can be more more readily assessed for the available position.

They’re all internal candidates other than me. There’s 2 available positions and 4 internal candidates.
Means they are hedging bets and you didn't wow them completely. But don't count yourself out. Took me three callbacks to get the best job I ever had. Some people might give up. Don't give up until they say, "No."
What would have happened if I did wow them? I would have got an offer straight away even if they haven’t finished interviews yet?
IT's according to their corporate practices. Some companies will interview everyone, others will take a candidate they think was outstanding for the git-go.
That's a very good sign.
