Is it normal for a company to offer you a position lower than what you applied for and interviewed for without telling you anything before the offer?

And without any explanation of why?

For example, you apply and interview for a senior consultant position but they offer you a junior consultant position. And there’s no mention of them doing that any point during the recruitment process and they don’t highlight it or give any reason when they make the offer.

They may feel you aren't qualified for the senior position, but they still want to secure your services.

If that is the case, it's poor from not to make this clear to you.

I would not have minded if they had told me at some point that this was their thinking. But instead they told me on the phone that it’s good news and congratulations.

The last time I applied for a job, they wanted to know what kind of work I was looking for, had me dig up my resume tell them, of all my previous experiences, etc. and, when the entire process was over, they made me a fucking JANITOR!!! EXACTLY why I spent 4 years in college!!
