I will encourage my children to get an education, if it be trade or academic - or a profession bachelor, like I have - I don't care as long as they follow their dreams. Hopefully that includes a degree of some sort since I do belief that does give a better security and foundation for the future.
The pay I do not have to worry about since education in Denmark is tax funded. Except if they chose to go to boarding school - that I'll be encouraging too.
Boarding schools are amazing for children's development, independence and if you pick the right one - you can cater to your child's interests by picking a school that honours those, if it be music, sports, computer, art - you name it.
Myself, I went to a Christian boarding school - that focused on music and sports. Those two years made me grow a lot - both personally and academically and you gain friendships for life.
College was a waste of time for me. I wish I had just become self taught and started my own business. That would have saved me a bunch of time and money instead of getting a useless degree.
My cousin went to an Ivy League school and it’s one of the best decisions she has ever made, every single guy she has ever dated was an Ivy League student and a millionaire and with a very good looking body and face too and she gets offers for Wall Street jobs faster than a clown gets offers for photo shoots.
Okay but is she using her brains or her looks to get by? Because you make it sound like she's a gold digger or doing certain things to score these jobs
I would encourage them to go on the knowledge that they are pursuing their dreams. I don’t want them to go if they don’t care. And I wouldn’t want them to go if it would only waist their time. A lot of kids go to collage because they think they need to or because they’re taught that they need to. That is bull. But it is good if you are going for the education that you want. So I would encourage them.
It's only natural that we (husband and I) will do our level best to encourage both our children to continue into university after their college education which is mandatory but free of all costs here in the UK.
Unfortunately university fees are astronomical at the present time, so heaven knows how much it will be in some twenty years time!
I will pay for it if they have a goal or ambition.
My parents paid for mine. I finished BS in engineering in 3 years. They paid for my brother too. He went into humanities and took forever and then couldnt find a job.
So it depends on what they want to go into and ensuring it has a future.
I drummed it into their heads since they were little that they were going to a good college and major in something good (ie : something that would enable them to get a good job afterwards). My wife and I paid for most of it. I did not want my kids to struggle with paying tuition like I did.
They all graduated in 4 years and all make more money than I do so the plan worked.
Good question. I had my favourite uni, one of those 'world top', I was hoping I'd help them get to. It disapointed me big time recently. I would certainly not expect my future child to go to it unless it could articulate to me why. There are better towns and more genuine knowledge centers to be found. The 'top universities' list seems like that Mercer list of best cities to live in - rigged to promote places that one is probably best off avoiding.
I'd definitely support them monetarily and teach them the habits of working that I have garnered (have climbed the corporate ladder to dealing with C-level execs and doing some directoring).
The point of college is study for a prefered career, so if the college teaches a job they actually want, and it either can't be learned as easily outside college, or they need the degree to be hired, then it's worth them going.
Parents should always cover the cost of anything the state doesn't when it comes to education for their children, but nothing should be forced, the person should want the career, not be dragged into it or settle for it.
I'm not having children. Because I would very much want them to go to college. The only problem is the university system is a scam, and it's set up to drain bank accounts and put people in debt. And I wouldn't want want my kids going into debt; nor would I want them wasting their potential by not going (like I did).
Nah. F that. I know from personal experience that that's a scam. I worked hard myself but there were never going to be enough scholarships to cover everything. The system is rigged against poor people and that's just a fact.
I fully disagree. A lot of schools here for example give out full tuition uni scholarships to top 10 in the HS class and partial tuition uni scholarships (OR full tuition community college scholarships) to top 20. Also when my sis graduated in 2019, everyone who graduated HS alone was guaranteed free tuition for a community college at the least. And then if you played a sport or did band, you were already getting full rides to at least a community college as well. Its not a scam BUT if you drop out of college then yes you’re rightfully required to pay it back
(Continued) and note that a lot of the “rich kids” dont even make top 10. Daddys money couldnt buy them a brain and most teachers can't be paid off these days for good grades. So if anything, the un-poor kids you speak of could still play a sport and get an athletic scholarship if not academic. There are many opportunities for everyone regardless of monetarial status. My top 10 consisted of 8 of us whose parents didn't even make 30-40k and one “not rich” kid whose parent worked the staff. But he had gold scholarships lined up as a backup
2 year degrees are the one of the “at leastl things that most jobs even ask for these days. Plus from community college, high gpas, volunteer work, and frat/soros can get you a full or partial Tuition scholarship to a uni. Again, i would know and i know many this worked for as well
(Continued) you didn't have to be a star. Most people got athletic participation scholarships which meant, you could suck at a sport, gett into a college FREE and then major in something non sports related. Plenty of people do it. Again, im not saying everyone. I’m just presenting you with offers that were made to people who went fresh out of HS and fresh out of juco. If you sit out a year then it takes away the option unfortunately
If you get an athletic scholarship, doesn't that mean you're supposed to play on the college team, though? Otherwise, why would they even be giving away money like that?
Yea but you could ride the bench and still major in a non athletic thing. A lot of athletes often get away with sucky academics due to ability but even those who dont major in stuff like coaching/sports agent/sports medicine etc as a backup plan. Its always good to have backup plans. And i didn't say i knew everything. Im just explaining opportunities so that you can share them with someone else someday
Right. But that's what I'm saying. Even if you're a benchwarmer, you're still a part of the team and therefore you're still required to attend all workouts, practices, and games. That's time away from schoolwork. And people with learning disabilities cannot afford to lose even one minute of that time.
@DizzyDesii I understand. Sorry for my snarkiness.
they can do whatever they want. i will not push it. i don't think it's smart for an 18 year old straight out of high school to figure out what they want to do until they're 65... they can take a bit, really think it over, experience the world more, etc. and yes, i will help pay because i actually budget and save money because i never want to be in a position were i'm struggling or where i ask my kids for help like i had to deal with growing up.

thankfully, me and my partner both went to college (together) and we use our degree very single day in our careers. i hope the same for my child. i have a friend who wasted her degree, admittedly it was an extremely stupid major I don't know why she did that.. so she's stuck at a deadend job and still paying for her loan.
Well although i consider my business degree pointless, i’m just glad it was by scholarship so there was no money wasted. And it is smart to go to school straight out of high school so that your scholarships (for those who get them) is still applicable. That way loans will not be something needed
It massively increases their chance of a high paying job and it's a life experience that will make them grow. Meeting so many different people that challenge you and being exposed to new ideas makes you grow. Your word becomes bigger.
Just staying in your bubble, among the people you know, the same kind of people, all your life, never increasing your knowledge on so many different fields, your world is small.
Yes i would encourage my kids to go to college for sure. & I would pay for it if i can afford to. i would say do what me & your late grandfather never did.
i just want to say if you're ever not feeling the best.
Look at a sunset 🌇 that's your beauty wrapped up in the sky
Education is really important for everyone. I would encourage everyone to complete a bachelors degree. Ofcourse it will be my duty to support my kids financially, mentally and protect them. Without any formal education, it will be hard to survive in this cruel world.
I would not force them if they don't want to but I will definitely encourage them to give it a try. If nothing else it will be an experience that will help them grow. And I don't have any problems paying for their college as long as they commit to what they want to do in college.
I make it clear it's not the only option and not necessarily the best option but it is a good option (unless they major in crap). They have to decide if they want to go, I'm just here to support at that point.
I'd support them if they wanted to go but def not gonna pay for it. College is pretty much a waste unless they specifically know what they wanna do with their life's long term and most 18 year olds just don't know that yet.
I knew what i wanted but i didn't have the guts to do it so i settled for a business degree. But i hate sales and financial related jobs so i set myself up with that one. Its hard to score marketing jobs believe it or not

I always thought boarding schools were like sleepaway camp. What are they exactly?

Oh wow i see
College was a waste of time for me. I wish I had just become self taught and started my own business. That would have saved me a bunch of time and money instead of getting a useless degree.
I agree

She used her brains, worked 14 hour days to get money.

I went just cause it was free lmao

Thats great that its free tho
My daughter tried going to college but couldn't handle it. Her dream was to be a math teacher but college wasn't for her.
Did you pay for it?
I paid for the first semester. She dropped out after that.
@Sparkie460 That's okay. I'm proud of her for trying.
@Jamie05rhs thanks. I am too.
You're welcome! :)
I will pay for it if they have a goal or ambition.

No ifs, ands, or buts. Mine are going and we're covering what the scholarships don't cover.
I agree that college isn't for everyone and there are high paying jobs that don't require a college level education.
Maybe they will get a full academic scholarship like i did and then you won’t have to pay anything
We're only paying partial housing on one kiddo, so I can't complain.

And a lot of those top unis are rapey people attending

"A mind is a terrible thing to waste."
So have them work hard for a scholarship
Nah. F that. I know from personal experience that that's a scam. I worked hard myself but there were never going to be enough scholarships to cover everything. The system is rigged against poor people and that's just a fact.

Desi, how the f you expect me to get into the Top 10? Come on, now! 😠. I have a learning disability! 😑
I honestly dont think i ever knew that
"There are many opportunities...". Stfu (with all due respect.). People always say that shit. Just like the DC Lottery. ("Lot's Of People Win!!")
And played sports, too, but I wasn't a f'ing star or anything.
And where does a community college degree get anyone? Nowhere.

But i did both of what you said. I got the degree but also stayed in my bubble among the people i know and kept the same mindset so 🤷♀️
Where are you from?
MS USA
I do hear that college there is very different from what it is here in Europe.
Ahh okay. Never realized you were in another country
I am from Portugal.
Yes i would encourage my kids to go to college for sure. & I would pay for it if i can afford to. i would say do what me & your late grandfather never did.

@DizzyDesii if you could would you take back going to college?
No i got a pointless 4 year degree. Im not goin back for crap
A... If I have the means- I definitely will aid them. In some countries university is free more or less once you had good grades in high school.
It's not easy working and studying. I didn't have to do this and wouldn't want my kids to.
I chose not to work until after college. Thats where i messed up. didn't have the experience to match although i had the degree
Education is really important for everyone. I would encourage everyone to complete a bachelors degree. Ofcourse it will be my duty to support my kids financially, mentally and protect them. Without any formal education, it will be hard to survive in this cruel world.
Its skill and job experience thats needed more than a degree
I agree but first you need a degree then you can take a short course of any skill.
I would not force them if they don't want to but I will definitely encourage them to give it a try.
If nothing else it will be an experience that will help them grow.
And I don't have any problems paying for their college as long as they commit to what they want to do in college.
