What do you think about embarrassment / humiliation being used as a tool of discipline in schools?

I'm currently retraining as a teacher and we've been told that we should never use humiliation or embarrassment to discipline the kids. This is in start contrast to my day, when punishments would involve e. g. litter picking in a pink high viz jacket, or sitting in detention in a room with a glass wall to the canteen.

PE teachers used this the most, e. g. when we forgot our PE kit, we'd be given a spare that included a bright yellow pair of shorts and t shirt, to make us stand out as much as possible! And for indoor lessons the boys would only be given the shorts, and have to do the lesson without any shirt at all (to our amusement when we had joint lessons!)

What do you think of the above sorts of practices? Is it right they seem to have died out?
