1 moNo idea. When I go out running I do not normally see people 20 to 35 years old. I do encounter people 45 and older staying fit. The younger ones are at donut shops getting fat. 5'3 and pushing 300 lbs. is not a good thing.

Unfortunately there are a lot of reasons why someone can’t or doesn’t want to lose weight , it doesn’t always mean they are lazy , it can be a medical condition, or mental condition like addiction , it can be genetics , because not everyone is built the same , and not everyone has high metabolism to burn fat easily , people with high metabolism, can eat whatever they want and not gain a pound and barely have to exercise , but people with low metabolism will gain pounds just from eating a slice of pizza. The bottom line is that our bodies were built for survival, storing fat is a natural process our bodies were made to do , to keep us warm and to protect our organs. Someone that is really fat , is usually caused by a medical or mental condition that they are not aware of , it’s not always because they are lazy. It just makes them seem like they are lazy. your Mom sits down every 10 minutes because she probably has a medical condition that eliminates her for standing for a long period of time , so the best thing you can do for her , is to suggest her going to see a doctor without being disrespectful about it , just tell her that you are concerned for her health and that you notice she is sitting down every 10 minutes and that she is not very active. She might be under stress or have a medical condition that she is unaware of. So the best thing you can do is be supportive of her every which way you can. Most people get set in their ways without thinking it’s that big of a deal. Me personally struggled with weight ever since I was kid , so I did everything I could to lose weight , I exercised like crazy and watched what I ate , and I would slim down , but I would never be skinny, so I went to a doctor to find out that I have big bone structure , so I was always considered a broad guy , a mixture of fat and muscle , for me to be skinny , I would have to literally starve myself to death , which I am not going to do lol. So I stopped focusing on being skinny and focused on maintaining. My weight and building muscle , by staying active and not over eating , I use to think girls’ wouldn’t be attracted to me , but I was wrong lol , a lot of girls’ like tall broader guys’ like myself so not everyone is attractive because they are skinny , it’s just the way i was built when I was born.

1 moIt’s because many people rather be told a feel good lie vs. the hard truth. It’s gotten to be ridiculous.
It’s gotten so bad that during the Covid pandemic I remember the mass media intentionally downplaying the number one co-morbidity factor: obesity. They kept bringing up the number 2, 3, 4 factors (age, compromised immunity system, etc.). But they didn’t want to bring up being overweight just to spare someone’s feelings.
Then came all the ugly ass “plus sized” models. The obese woman on the cover of Victoria’s Secret. Trying glamourize large Marge’s like Lizzo as well.
This is finally being peeled back. People know it’s ridiculous. Most men aren’t physically attracted to plus sized women or vice versa (unless the guy is filthy rich and funny).
But more importantly being obese shortens your lifespan and leads to all sorts of health complications.
With all that said I will never tease a heavy person unprovoked. But I’ve notice a lot of fat people think it’s “okay” to bully and tease skinny people. Some the worse unprovoked and antagonism I’ve gotten were from fat girls. I know it’s rooted in deep insecurity and a bs defense mechanism to get the negative attention of themselves. But still it’s true.

1 moThat’s like asking why some people don’t want to be wealthier , most do ! .. Wanting something and finding a sustainable way to achieve it are not the same thing.
Dont see it as judging them for their lack of motivation before understanding their obstacles.. or you will likely come across as being ignorant and judgmental. Instead practice empathy and try to see the world and those within it with different eyes.
There are a myriad of reasons why many people struggle with loosing weight. Stress , anxiety, depression , bad habits over large portions of their life , poor education, busy lives , shift work , caring responsibilities, chronic pain , hormonal issues , medications, financial circumstances, etc etc etc10 Reply406 opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. How do you expect people that live on unhealthy fast food to ever get healthy. This is an issue in the US, much less elsewhere because people don't have so much access to garbage food.
Your mom drinks diet C**e but why does she not drink water instead of that poison? She and all the other overweight people should start with drinking healthy and cooking healthy foods rather than to buy ready made microwave foods and take out and junk food from those junk food places.
Eating lots of veggies, nuts, lean fish would help those that are concerned by obesity but I guess it is too time consuming to cook healthy rather than to just to order out.
I am not even talking about exercising rather than to take the car to go to the mail box 200 yards away...

@_Jenny_ Oh I am sure that the CDC and other health organizations already have such plans in place. However, it needs for the population to acknowledge that it has an obesity issue. It should start with all the junk food being taxes very high to try to motivate people to eat healthy and not just take out foods.
1.1K opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. I think a lot of it is conditioning. People are conditioned to move from their couch to the car seat to the office seat, then back. Of course, they become lazy, because the body seeks comfort and paths of least resistance.
There is pretty much no practical advice or education about health. If you're sick you go to the doctor for a pill. Whereas in reality, health is something that is maintained *by yourself* so you get ill less frequently. Most people don't even believe that alternative methods, diet and exercise have any material benefit.
Having said that, I don't get it. I've always enjoyed exercising. And sure I like some junk food, but you eat too much of it and you feel crap. So there is natural gravitation towards healthy foods as a corrective mechanism. Fasting also makes you feel great.
I also agree with the fellow below. Most people didn't of covid. They died of obesity. 40% of Americans are obese. That should be a shock...

1 moHumans tend to seek pleasure and avoid pain. The problem boils down to their cognitive psychology (Their Thoughts + Their Feelings = Their Perception) and it just turns out a lot of people have been brain washed into thinking exercise is the worst thing ever to endure.
So much so that it enables them to ignore better health, better sexual oppertunities, and just generally feeling better all the time. It's been conflated with "work" which is another thing that has become dread for many... and I blame all of this on public school systems in the younger years.
00 ReplyThere is a lot of reasons why someone might get to that point and it is easy to tell someone to change vs actual change occurring. If the person has always been unhealthy they’re not going to know what healthy habits look like and most people aren’t going to put in the effort to help them.
I used to be a lot heavier and was lucky enough that someone helped me, but I know quite a few people that were extremely judgmental that later gained weight. It made them more empathetic as they struggled to get back to where they were. Sometimes life just happens

Anonymous(25-29)1 mobecause people tend to be creatures of habit. They get used to not moving so movement becomes uncomfortable to them. If you grew up running around, or have a physical job, there is a good chance you won't be a couch potato at home. It is all based on what the person is accustomed to. For someone who runs around daily, it would be very uncomfortable for them to be tied to an a desk and chair all day.
Also because the human body is designed to retain fat. You are designed to eat back the calories that you burned. It goes back to the caveman days. Back then, food wasn't always readily available. If you ran around 12 hours a day hunting for food and still underrate on calories... it would mean death. Fat storage was also important because it provided humans fuel to burn during winters without food.

1 moLess than 3% of the total population has a fitness routine that is part of their daily life.
Ask her if she wants to be part of that group. The 3%, then she can work towards her master's. That's the 1% group. Look at it from an encouraging perspective. I'm a swimmer, and at work they know I go swimming on my lunch break. 🏊♂️♥️🙏00 Reply1.9K opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. It is not as easy as you make it out to be. I used to be overweight at some point like more than a decade ago, I managed to lose it but it wasn't as easy as you present it
I still eat incredibly unhealthy, but I exercise and I eat small portions, so my weight is "healthy", but truthfully I am not.00 Reply
1 moThe same reason people who don't want to have kids have unprotected sex, or drug addicts and smokers can't give up their old habits. They like the sex and some people love the food addiction that they have. Maybe an intervention needs to happen? Because they are never going to change without help. If anything, do it out of love for them. Start off with smaller portions?

1 moYou have to practice empathy. Being obese can be emotionally debilitating for many. Plus we don’t know the root of what caused them to be so unhealthy in the first place. It could be manic depression or trauma that hasn’t been properly addressed. Sometimes you just live for others so much and forget to take care of yourself. You’re framing it to be a simply moving your body, but the root of it is psychological.

1 moLosing weight is hard. And, let's be honest, it means giving up a lot of things that the heavy person enjoys/ed. There are usually also social implications to losing weight.
So, it's a combination of the fact losing weight is hard and basic general fear of the unknown.
00 Reply399 opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. You bring up a good point. It is difficult to believe that people just can't get up and even go for a walk!!! I guess once some loose their self esteem they just kind of give it up. As we both know staying healthy and at a good weight has many health and sexual benefits.

Anonymous(30-35)1 moIt's nice that your life is so sparkly easy that you can get outside, walk and ride a bike whenever you want.
Have you ever considered that some people live with pain? Emotional pain that food gives them short spurts of relief. Sure it isn't healthy but resisting that urge takes strength and not everyone has that energy.
If you manage to push your mom to lose weight, will her life become magical?

1 moMaybe because it’s their bodies and they can do as they please. If your personal happiness about anything relies on the actions of other people doing what you want, you’re never going to be happy.

1 moi guess people do "want" that generally speaking. but they're not willing to put in the difficult work to reach that goal. so they may act as if they don't want it alltogether so they can legitimate just giving up on it.

1 moOne does not simply "lose weight" It requires a huge effort of willpower and often surgical intervention. Plus in America, everything you eat makes you fat.
