What makes a good lecturer?

I am never satisfied with my knowledge and always feel critical of myself and always try to learn more.

I don’t think I am in a position to lecture anyone, I’ve done it and I’ve been told it was amazing,

but I don’t feel confident doing that.

However, I’ve been told I have the aura of competence and confidence and people often picture me as someone who knows things.

I, though, know nothing better than “I don’t know anything myself”.

I guess because of my knowledgeable imagine, I am currently invited as a part-time lecturer in Suzhou, I’ll have my personal driver and I’ll perform lectures for professionals.

That’s the job I had an offer from this summer, sadly they couldn’t provide visa and full time job offer but they didn’t want to lose me after I successfully finished the 3 parts of interviews and they offered me the chance to be an invited lecturer. (Part-time)

I feel very responsible to have great results and to have enjoyable and memorable lectures.

But I am a bit worried. I need to perfect myself first to be good at that, I feel like I am not perfect though.

And I start lectures on Monday.

I find the mark of a truly intelligent and competent person is the understanding of how little they actually know. You are human. You will never be perfect. You also don't need to be. Relax and simply do the best you can.

Some people will not respond to it. That is unavoidable. Not everyone can be reached. Others, however, will be inspired. You know this to be true from past experience. And that is the goal, is it not? To inspire others to pursue knowledge as you have? You needn't be perfect to achieve this goal. You need only be present and purposeful. And that you can do.

Watch some TED Talks. They’re pretty good but they’re also regimented in their presentation. As an instructor I gained confidence from such a thorough knowledge of the material that I could go “off-road@, so to speak, and expound on various aspects not found on the slides. Especially if someone has additional questions.

Deep subject matter knowledge and a good structured flow on the slides will help.

Never read off of the slides. Keywords to keep you on track and then just gush about the topic. I received the award for Instructor of the Year my 1st year in my institute. A general and a few Colonels sat in the back of my classroom. They were pleased.

I try to revue the material before the lecture and I try to engage with the audience. If you act like you are interested in getting the audience to understand the material they will in turn be more interested as well. I try to "Own the Room" and often move around the room and speak in a certain cadence. This keeps everyone awake.

A good lecturer understands their audience, speaks to them and gives them information in a way that they can easily understand. A good lecturer prepares, but also is willing to go ad hic when necessary. Finally, a good lecturer knows their topic well, but is always aware that there us more to learn.

A good lecturer is someone that knows the subject matter extremely well, can deliver the information in a logical sequence that is easy to understand and keeps the interest of the people the lecture is being delivered to.
