I’ve mostly worked customer service. If you want a basic idea of retail work that’s not overwhelming, head to a gas station. You have a more easily limited stock to worry about, and you learn the basics of a POS system. Plus, you get all types coming in for gas so it makes for some interesting stories lol
The one I would not ever recommend for a first job is a call center. It’s fine if you’re a talkative sort, but it is overwhelming as hell if you can’t figure out a system to handle calls, especially if it’s an incoming call center rather than outgoing.
Depends on what you’re looking for specifically. I’ve had a lot of different jobs but I personally am not a people person, so call center or support jobs worked best for me. The worst ones were “boutique” retail jobs. First of all, incredibly claustrophobic and you have to speak to every one who comes in, stand around while they shop, and actually have conversations with them about what they’re looking for (which I know is the job description and that is why I no longer work those jobs)
The easiest entry level jobs were big department stores and grocery stores.
I recommend a food service position.
This puts the reality of where our food comes from into perspective while also teaching customer service and problem-solving skills.
It also usually comes with free food which is a great motivator.
I started in the kitchen BOH side and I often thank my lucky stars I've had these superior cooking skills my whole life. Not just flavor-wise, but the ability to chop, slice, dice, filet meat/fish, techniques to make food crisp, fresh, tasty instead of soggy, bland, under/overcooked. There are so many simple things to cooking, and so many people do it poorly. I feel really blessed I spend a few years as a chef, it's made the rest of my life better.
