I recently started a job as a salesperson, it is not my speciality I just need the money and my job is just to sell stuff on the phone, no human contact whatsoever. Today I was called to the manager’s office and received a warning for coming to work without makeup.
I worked at other companies and I’ve never worn makeup to work before unless it is an important meeting day, makeup is just not my thing. Mind you, I’ve never come to work “sloppy”. I always wear ironed shirts, black pants, blazer jacket, clean black shoes and my hair is always nicely done. I just don’t wear makeup and honestly I am not good at it, so better not do it than doing it poorly, I guess. But I think I was wrong about it, lol. There is no such thing in company policies and the male employees come to work not shaved. So I’m asking is that a common occurrence or a major red flag?
You need to check what is written in your contract about the make-up. Even if you are a sales person, sometimes these jobs are face to face and ridiculously some employers do require you to wear makeup.
If there is nothing in the company policy or in your contract, maybe speak with HR

If you are in America you can get a religious exemption to not have to wear make up. You could also tell them you are gender fluid and every time they ask you to wear make up tell them you are identifying as a man that day. That way if they still make you wear make up they would have to force the males to as well. Otherwise you could sue. They will more than likely find a fake reason to fire you either way if you don't comply.
I wonder how much makeup your boss was wearing. Unless it required for both men and women I would take offense at the requirement. Hopefully you can find a better place to work at.
Right or wrong, ultimately it is probably up to the company rules and contract that you signed. You should check with your HR, though try not to be confrontational about it as they are the ones who hire you.

Sue. It’s illegal. They can only require it as a dress code in certain types of professions that deal with the public face to face - for example for waitresses, flight attendents or bar tenders.
depending where you are, look into your contract. Then contact a union if applicable and make a complaint.
