One coworker tells me it is not their job. I say yes because we are a team...
In a perfect world? Absolutely. Just like how we should be able to go our managers and/or HR if we feel unsafe or have issues in the workplace, and be able to report said issues without fear of repercussions-
However, real life doesn't work that way. Your coworkers are not your friends, nor should you expect anything out of them. I know, that sounds callous, but I learned a long time ago not to rely on anyone in the workplace but yourself if you want something done right. Otherwise, you'll get disappointed.
If you have someone you can rely on or act as an alibi in the workplace? That's awesome! But I've had coworkers see me get mistreated or lied to- ask me if they defended me? Nope. They only look out for themselves, or are afraid if they say something, they will get punished too.
So yes, a coworker -should- stick up for you. Do they? Rarely. Most people only care about themselves (in the workplace and other aspects of life) and will only help you if it benefits themselves as well.

Of course people should support each other. Sadly too many people only care about themselves.
