I’ve got Brand Marketing Role interviews but I graduated in Computing and Gaming?

So the other day I got invites from my university for a Brand Development role and an Event marketing role.

1. Because I’ve already interned with the uni before
2. I’m really good at video editing and making media for social media.

I’m not really worried about the interviews, I’m confident I can land at least one of the jobs. The problem comes when my brothers think I’m wasting my time since I did a degree in Creative Computing (Gaming) and now to them seems I’m not using that degree just to get trapped in a 9-5.

I’ve been applying to game related Jobs since August 2023, improving my resume and portfolio but I’ve only ever gotten 2 interviews and never heard again from either. I’ve probably applied to 500+ jobs by now, so I was so happy I got an offer for two interviews as part of my universities new graduate scheme. My plan is to work for the university whilst improving my portfolio and apply to game related marketing jobs to show I have experience.

But my first older brother I texted this about says this I’m going to be wasting my time and it’s a trap that’s going to keep stuck in that job. It’s not worth it because it only pays £25,000 per annum. For a first graduate job that’s pretty good in my opinion, yeh it’s close minimum wage but in this economy its harder to find a GOOD job that pays this much especially when your 21. My second oldest brother said pretty much the same thing but, that I need to value my time into my portfolio rather than chase money, which is not exactly what I’m doing, like I said I can earn whilst building my portfolio. I will say he’s is worried that I keep changing my mind about what particular what I want to do, whether its game concept art, vfx or UI, but I’ve been applying to all sorts of roles and have gotten nowhere so I don’t think I can be too choosy because who knows when an opportunity like this can happen again.

Take the interviews, land the job and build portfolio whilst working

With how video game storefronts work now, and the popularity of lets plays on youtube, and with the high use of adblockers, and the lack of television channel use among gamers, game marketing ads are essentially pointless.

If someone likes a type of game, they will likely know about it already before seeing your ad, unless its a niche indie game, and with those they can't afford marketing teams.

Its a dying profession.

Find a different profession you're interested in.
I'm impatiently waiting for games I wishlisted that won't be out until next year or longer.
There is even a website that gives gamers years of prior notice before releases.

Add to that discovery queues, recommendation engines, storefront sales, friends reccomending games, friend and stranger activity feeds showing games, reviews for games, customized search engines, stores having videos and pics of the games on their store page, pro leagues for games, etc, and there are just so many ways to hear about a game now.

I get your point but these studios still need people to do the promotional art and video editing for trailers and stuff and even if i don’t do marketing I could do game art or something similar

Thats all in house stuff, no sense hiring a third party for what most members of the dev team can do in a video editing program and photoshop. Advertising agencies tend to also cause studios to go bankrupt, so less and less studios are using them now. You should switch to game art and just be part of a dev team if you can do that.

Also game art should be screenshots of the game, and trailers should be finalized gameplay clips with music thats actually in the game, otherwise its just false advertising and you piss off your customers.

Take the work, and use the new connections to develop the network that gets you into the field you intend to specialize in. You could meet other people with similar education and experience, and who share your goals; future collaborators, if you will. Employers tend to sniff out primadonnas as part of the interview process now anyway.

This is typical. Go to college, boatload of money. And you don't get a job in what was studied.

Earning money and experience is good, even if it's just a fill in job. Keep looking for jobs you want.
If you've applied 500 times you need a different approach. Dunno what that is though. Maybe your new company had openings in different areas.

That’s the plan but I don’t thinks it’s wise to be out of work to do so
