Need advice on not liking any job i've ever had?

I went to technical school for cosmetology when I was in H. S., I did hair and nails and dropped out after 1 year of a 2 yr program. I've had mostly Admin position my adult life, I tend to job hop after 18 months to 3 years. Various reasons, not challenged, or the environment is not healthy. I kind of like admin jobs, because the pay is okay, I have nights and weekends to myself. I can’t stand the bureaucracy, drama and office politics. I've had jobs I liked, but the pay was very low. I was once an Activities Assistant at a Retirement Community, where I live now, I would not be able to support myself.

FYI, I've tried to go back to school many, many times. Some programs you need to be their full time, I don't have the financial support to do that now. Some classes you need to be on site. Going back to college seems like a huge challenge and I’m at a loss.

You have to think about what gets you excited in life and realign your professional path to match that point of attraction/excitement.

For one week, as soon as you wake up in the morning think of the very first thing that will make you happy and make a list. Keep the list with you and jot down anything else that gets your attention. At the end of the week you'll have a sort of scattered list of words and ideas that can form the keyword search for your next job move. Add to it the things that you already have experience and training in... You can workshop it to see if there's a hybrid job.

Consider whether you're better with people or working quietly with your hands.

Consider whether you have undiagnosed ADD/ADHD/Depression because that can impact interest levels.

Consider the "Where do you see yourself in five years?" question -- cliche, I know, but keep thinking about it till you feel you're on solid ground with a potential vision to manifest.

Everyone's life and career paths shift from their original at least to some degree. Don't fret. You can get through this. The answer is inside your heart, though, it's not something we can answer here, not knowing much about you.

What are your goals? I feel like you are lacking consistency and drive. There are plenty jobs out there that pays well without a degree.

I would still say try and at least get an associates degree. You may not like these jobs but you have to find a job that supports you until you know what you want to do.

Nobody truly likes their job but we work to take care of ourselves.

Stay a bit more consistent with things. (Especially things that help elevate you like education)

Okay- I had to dropbout of college twice because of financial problems. I finally went back at night and eventually graduated. I was 36 years old. I went to grad school right after that and got my Masters in Computer Science and went into the IT field. I was 39 years, old. I had a successful career and now I am teaching CS at a local college.
There are a lot of opportunity for assistance to go back to school and there are many specialized rograms that could put you in a career in two years or less Look at it this way, you will be 50 someday. Wouldn't it be better to turn 50 doing something you like and getting paid well for it or just continue on the path you are on now.

If your always the square peg trying to fit in the round hole then you have to ask yourself , is it me? In this case from what you have said I believe it is you that has to change. The vast majority of people don’t really “like” their jobs but we push ourselves to focus and be as good as we can be regardless. It sounds like your looking for a perfect fit that just can’t exists as it’s your perception that’s skewed.


My advice , don’t attempt to further educate yourself. It would be a waste of time and effort. Pick a job you’ve don’t before and just be BETTER!!

Stick to admin jobs. My mom did that when she worked. It sounds like you like them better than other jobs and like you said you have nights and weekends free to do whatever you want.
