It might be appropriate to tell my boss about the relationship dynamics I have with my parents, as it does affect my work style (I'm insecure around my performance abilities). But maybe it would also be too much information?

Your boss is showing an interest in your personal life, which is part of the typical worker-to-worker dynamic. Best to not divulge your parents' visit might affect your work. Better to say something neutral, like "Their visit will be interesting."

I wouldn't tell him. Your boss is not your friend. They can easily use this against you in some way in future negotiations or so. All your boss needs to know is that you show up and work, anything else is taking a risk.

I wouldn’t necessarily go into the details of your childhood trauma but letting your boss know “yeah, I’m not looking forward to it as they make me anxious” is safe enough

Bosses don't care about your dynamics. They only care about results. You don't need the added stress of them looking at you even more closely expecting mistakes. Just keep Yr head down and keep trying to do your best!!

i don't give any work people personal info like that. i'd just keep it to myself. there is nothing he can do to help your work confidence because it involves your parents. i think therapy would work better

You could give a non-answer like, "It's been _____ months since I've seen them." If you say "No." expect more questions.

I never give personal information at work. People slip and then the whole place finds out. Say nothing or just smile and say yes.
