A believe a huge problem is that we are outsourcing a lot of our tech roles overseas. In the US, we are currently facing a white-collar job recession, with tech being hit the hardest. So many, including myself, are facing long-term unemployment. Then you have disgusting foreigners like below who want to swoop these roles away from Americans.

Just to let everyone know, I am more than fine with an $80k salary. It is better than $0.

There is still unmet demand for highly skilled programmers. The outsourced work is mostly lower level administrative work that is largely being replaced with cloud services from Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. American corporations tried outsourcing development to overseas consultancies but often got very poor results. There is huge variation in the productivity of software developers. Some can solve a problem neatly in a couple of days that would take others a month to produce a poor solution if they were even able to complete the task. It's often the case that the $100/hour programmer is cheaper than the $20/hour programmer. I joined a company that had outsourced their web development to a Chinese consultancy. Six of us were able to easily do the work of fifty in China. I worked on a project for Experian that had been outsourced to a Cognizant team. There were nine on the team -- a so-called architect in Dallas and eight programmers in Calcutta. Experian ended up terminating the contract as myself and one Experian employee were able to do more than the nine of them.

I have seen it firsthand where developer work is being outsourced. One company, I was the sole in-house developer making McDonald's pay. Of course my boss was a cheap ass, but this was the only way to get my foot into the door. Most of the other work was being outsourced to India and China. I had a Chinese man convince me to buy a small laptop so he could hack into it and conceal his nationality so he could work on my behalf. That was a HUGE mistake on my part. At another company I worked for, I had to clean up a lot of shitty work from overseas developers. The work coming from overseas is mostly junk.

This needs to stop and stop NOW! I am among some highly skilled developers that cannot land a new job.

Americans mostly are not educated enough to do these jobs, and the billionaires that own these companies do not want to pay the prevailing wage rates.

There is most certainly a pool of brilliant developers here in the United States that are more than capable of holding these roles. I can speak for myself and say I am very talented and don't expect a $150k salary. An $85k salary is fine for me with a stable economy and lowered cost of living. Because at one point, $85k used to be more than an acceptable salary. Now, it is barely enough to live a comfortable middle class life as a single man. Of course, I am engaged and hope to one day have a family. But regardless, if we stop butchering out economy and bring jobs back and gain independence, we will be prosperous again.

It's not a job that requires extensive education. It requires some talent and a keen interest in learning.

@slatyb It doesn't require a post-secondary degree, which actually in most cases isn't good use. It is understanding and writing good quality code and possessing skill. I have a high school diploma, but it took countless days and nights to bring my skills up to where they needed to be. It is very challenging and often frustrating.

It's a rare skill and not everyone can learn to do it. The best are almost entirely self-taught by writing a lot of code for their own amusement.

@slatyb That is not entirely true. It goes well beyond that. You have to know a lot of concepts, conventions, best practices, and so on. Also a good understanding of security like hashing, SQL injection, XSS, CSRF, CORS, etc...

For example, do you know anything about http verbs? Get, post, put, patch, delete? Do you know how to make a fetch request or ajax call? Do you know how to structure and parse json? What is the precedence of style rules in CSS? What is the cascade in CSS? What are block vs inline-elements? What is flexbox and grid layout modules?

I've been coding for 25 years. I've been a full stack web developer on multiple projects. For the last three years I've been working in Typescript on a React front-end and a GraphQL server. How did I learn? I was hired about 15 years ago to join a struggling Ruby on Rails project. I didn't know Ruby or anything about web development, so I got a bunch of O'Reilly books on HTML, CSS, the DOM, Ruby, and Rails, and started reading. Three weeks later I realized that none of the Indian contractors on the project understood any of it. Eventually the entire offshore team was replaced with me and another guy in-house.

@slatyb This is what I do... full stack developer work. My title has been mostly frontend developer, but I am most certainly fullstack-capable. I am skilled in so many technologies, but my interest concentrates more towards the JS/TS ecosystem. Actually, the more I think about it, I am a little concerned with Trump's plan to invest in large AI infrastructure and data centers. I support Trump's overall agenda to put Americans first over foreigners, but this one agenda item of grave concern for me.

Jobs aren't coming back. Trump's buddies want to send out a bunch of H-1B visas to pay overseas employees much less for work that could be done by Americans. Most tech businesses are going to this model and as an IT employee, it worries me too. Please don't make the mistake that Trump is going to fix this for you though.

Of course Elon or Ramaswami doesn't speak for the American people. There will be some disagreements, but I hope Trump makes the right decision.

They are both part of his administration, and the rest of his cabinet are millionaires. They all want the same thing, cheaper operating costs which means more money in their pocket. He's not going to save you.

Start looking elsewhere for something in the meantime, even if it's fast food, just to get an income until you eventually do find something in your field (if you ever do).

Why find a new line of work when this type of work is the most fitting? Maybe I cannot find a job in this right now, but I am passionate about this and highly skilled. It goes back to the point where Xiden is pushing middle class tech workers into desperativity and low skilled menial labor roles.

Doesn't matter. Our job requires integrity and safety, so if we can't be sure and deliver on that, it opens us up to liability.

If we hire a fraudster who then defrauds the client, we can get sued or lose the contract.

If we hire a thief who steals from a client, we can get sued or lose a contract.

If we hire a stalker and someone even thinks they're now being stalked, we can get sued or lose the contract.

It may be minor to you, but not us.
