When going through a hiring process, do you mind having to put down references, show your high school diploma, have your social media checked, etc?

I was called as a reference for 2 different women and I was their manager at 2 different companies, years apart. Both were for high paying jobs, 6 figures plus bonus and benefits.

They gave it I guess because they had to and thought just like you do, that they won’t call.

You can only say so much in a call like that as there is risk of lawsuit. It’s more about how you say it and what you don’t say. The other manager gets it as both times it was the new hiring manager.

One of them actually had a ridiculous resume as I found it on her turned in work laptop. She claimed work accomplishments that wasn’t hers and claimed a range of responsibilities that weren’t hers in total. This was for a job years after she left us.

And the way she left us was to take maternity leave then come back and work one day and then turn in her resignation as she used her maternity leave to job hunt. This totally hurt the team that was taking up her slack and then really screwed them while we went through the hiring process to replace her but we did end up with the best person who ever held that role in the end.

I see someone on here who supposedly held high level positions says nobody submits a bad reference names and numbers. For high paying jobs you have to as they want you managers name and number. I know I have called references as a manager and I know that the references I put down for myself have been called. And I just gave 2 examples of getting called and have it be critical to the hiring managers. I have also seen people get walked out of the building by security for inaccurate resume information such as a University degree from another country that didn’t give him a degree.

It is best to check references. We weren’t allowed to consider social media posts so we never looked at them, only HR would.

It's the last thing I pay attention to when I hire people. If I'm hiring a camera person, I look at their portfolio and ask questions about that. I would be completely incompetent if I relied on a degree to hint at anything other than the perspective they were taught to approach from.

If I'm hiring a programmer, I look for them on forums and open source projects or I ask about their personal projects or I literally have them walk me through how they would solve some of the problems I'm having and force them to tell me what they would have to research and how they would learn what they need to learn.

If I'm hiring an accountant... I just ask around lol I have no idea how to find a good one. I just need vowels in the last name and someone who calls on facetime audio 😂
