So I'm in the hospital with my aunt uncle and mother where a nurse is having a heavy conversation about her stage 4 cancer.

She's a very sweet southern belle, probably around 60. But she laughs after every sentence. She'll be like

"alright, and write your email here so I can send you treatment documents aaahhhahahahahaha"

Luckily my aunt has a great sense of humor so we were kinda trying not to laugh at this lady because of how out of pocket it seemed.

The craziest part is she looks like she's been working there for over 30 years. Imagine that lady working in the ER.

Moral of the story is, even if they mean well nurses are sadistic psychos

I’m so sorry, it was a very inappropriate, not okay at all, and unprofessional response of her to laugh during a sensitive and important engagement with the patient and their families. I can understand how frustrating, odd, upsetting, or uncomfortable that might have been for you and your family. Sorry to hear your aunt is in her stage 4 cancer… hopefully she has a patient navigator/social worker if she doesn’t already have one yet who can be supportive, resourceful, and assist her navigating her cancer process. Sometimes, yes.

Not because I find things funny but because it’s a reflex when something feels awkward or intense.

I’ve learned to catch it though. A nervous laugh can soften a moment, but it can also hide what you actually feel.

These days, I try to respond not just react.

This is a terrible nervous habit that is highly inappropriate in a grave discussion. You might have a quiet conversation with the attending physician or the floor supervisor.

She's not doing it to upset people, it's a nervous habit that appears in serious discussion. It's still upsetting.
