College is usually more effort than intelligence. My last boyfriend didn't finish because he didn't want to take a bunch of classes he didn't care about and he's smarter than 99% of college graduates I know. Conversely, one of the least intelligent girls I knew in high school did finish college because she was extremely hard working and put in enough effort to finish.
YES! You aren't wrong! I don't know how American universities are ranked so high. My High School and Community College had higher standards then my university. In college I had to repeat a math class 3 times to get my degree, in uni I got a D in a REQUIRED course and they still gave me my degree XD. I was shocked with some of the people who made it into Uni, and a lot of the professors too.
Same, I know people who only finished high school and are WAY smarter then people with PhDs. There was a professor with a PhD in a tour group with me once, I've never met such a stupid person. And most professors have zero knowledge of subjects outside of their specific field. Someone said, "Well yeah, why should they. They're being paid and trained to be specialists." But they still had to take general ed. But I've had professors who didn't even know everything in their specified field.
One comedian also said, any bozo can get into an Ivy League. It's not about intelligence, it's just they're difficult to get into, because of high demand, but once you're in, they're no different from other schools. I went on RateMyProfessor for Yale and Harvard, and the ratings actually weren't that great.
I disagree only because it's not about discipline for most people who don't go. Many are actually quite disciplined enough to go but they are smart and brave enough to go a different route that doesn't require a college degree to get ahead. There are a lot of jobs that will hire you with a trade or certificate.
If you work in the trades or want to start a business you're better off to save your money and avoid college. If you want to make 6 figures in the US, trades are the easiest route and you'll finish with zero debt so that might actually be the smartest thing to do in 2026 and AI is no treat to your occupation.
There's a lot of trust fund kids taking useless courses. Kinda crosses part of the equation out..
I’d disagree; it’s more complex than discipline.
From years of advising students, I’ve seen at least four main factors:
1. Interests and goals – Some people thrive in trades, entrepreneurship, arts, or tech routes that don’t need college.
2. Learning style – Lecture-and-exam formats don’t suit everyone; many are hands‑on learners.
3. Finances and life context – Debt, family obligations, or health issues matter.
4. Fit with the system – Colleges are built around certain cultural and academic norms.
Lack of discipline explains a few cases, but not most.

It just means trade schools are better options for some folks wtf
Well, no one actually needs it to have a great career. I got there just from doing business training at night while working at my day job.
Disagree. It can mean they aren't cut for the academic environment, which is fine, not everyone wants to be an accountant or professor
