If Target requires us to wear their jeans, should they pay for them?

Had a meeting in Target today about the upcoming new dress code.
They want us to wear plain red shirts with jeans or khakis.
They said we should wear the jeans that are selling on the shelves.
What do you think of this?
If they want me to wear their jeans, shouldn’t they have to pay for it?

In my experience, when an employer requires particular workwear, it's their responsibility to supply the uniforms, especially in blue collar positions.

I guess that local and state laws, and additionally, terms of employment that may have been agreed to upon accepting employment may have a bearing on the subject.

based on how its stated, its not like they are requiring it, its that they are suggesting you SHOULD wear them. Now if they REQUIRED it as part of the dress code, they would be required by law to provide said pants, or at least reimburse you

The employer owns the job, not the employee. They're allowed to put whatever standards on it they want, and you can take it or leave it.

If an employer requires a uniform, they are generally required to provide the uniform to you, at their cost. Here, though, the jeans are not really part of a uniform, since you could wear them anywhere. It's an interesting, and creative , way for management to get you wear a specific outfit without them having to pay for it.

When I worked at spa, we were given one corporate shirt to be worn with docker-type pants. We could buy more shirts at $50 a pop (and this was quite some time ago). We had the option, but it's hard when you only have one shirt and need to wash it after a day of work to be ready for the next day. Maybe you can find the same brand or similar elsewhere for less money.

labour laws are different everywhere. you gotta google them up. where i live, employers can demand that you abide by a drescode. they can ask for specific colors or styles but they can't ask for specific brands. and it is required that you can wear said cloths privately. if you can't wear them privately (cause there's a company logo for example), it's considered work euipment and that as to be provided by the employer where i live.

Depends on the state laws and contract, if you have one, but generally any costs of mandatory uniform is covered by employers. Call your union if you have one or the labor board if you don’t.

You might check state laws/regulations some states have regulations that require stores to pay for the clothes if they are mandated for a dress code and you have to buy it.

they definitely should be paying for them if it's a required uniform. but sounds like they might be getting away with it by only "suggesting" you wear their jeans. I would bring it up to management though.
