How did you learn to read? By sight reading or by phonics?

Which do you think is better?

I was taught to read by my grandfather. I was like 2. It started with him reading me stories. By the time I was ready for kindergarten I was reading chapter books without pictures.

So I have no idea how I was taught be it by sight or sound.

And now I average 400+ books per year.

Yeah. I um abuse kindle unlimited. For example, this year alone I have read 302 books. Last year was 411, the year before was 735. Unlike the way school teaches you to read, one word at a time, I take chunks of a page at a time. My reading speed is between 1600 and 1800 words per minute. It's why I have a really hard time reading out loud, cause it's hard for me to slow down.

That's impressive. And I think I'm doing great by just reading my 9th book this year alone (10 technically, if you include my second complete reading of the Bible this year... just a little over halfway through the Old Testament).

I was taught to look at the word the teacher explained, the word we wrote the word 25xs, and used it in a sentence, and we were tested every Friday, and it was not an open-book test. Every word spelled wrong was written 25 times. Every month, we had tests on all the words we had learned over the months. Every wrong word was then written 50 times. That is the way we were taught

Why learn what is almost another language, then learn proper reading, wnriting and spelling afterwards. Phonics and phonetics are pretty much redundant. Why not learn properly from the start.

I still have a reading book from when I was a tot that was brilliant. It is called " The First Thousand Words" published bu Usborn, in the UK.

Mostly phonics but your taught certain words are better just recognised and said in a certain way, eg epiphany is not eppy fanny.
