So I want to start off by saying that this article although doesn’t give away any spoilers about the movie but hints at certain plot details so if you haven’t seen the movie and want to go in blind than read this article later. Lastly number 10 really doesn’t have anything to do with the movie but really me just geeking out about Julia Andrews who plays the main character in the movie.
1) The music
The music in this movie is classic it features such numbers as “my favorite things”, “I'll take care of you and many more. The music is amazing and timeless.
2) The story
Many musicals suffer from being a collection of musical numbers with a weak story connecting those making audiences feel cheated because they could have just watched the musical parts in clips but even without the music this movie stands on its own and gets you invested in what’s going on and you root for the characters.
3) It’s based on a true story
Many do not know this but it is loosely based on a true story of the vontrap family singers and Maria and the captain did fall in love and they did get married. So it’s great knowing that although the events were drastically changed this is a true tale.
4) The movie itself is great without the music
Even if you don’t like the music you can still enjoys it. You can still love these characters and like the movie which is unusual with musicals for reasons I mentioned in my second point.
5) Its timeless
It’s in no way dated even though its set during the Austrian invasion during World War 2 as fans in 2016 we can still enjoy it just as much as they did when it was released. In addition to that they don’t use outdated terms, slang or catchphrases that modern audiences might not get.
6) Anybody can enjoy it
It isn’t your typical chick flick it isn’t sappy in fact there some dark moments toward the end and tragic character story arcs. This separates in from the usual plot of romantic movie where boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, and they break up and then get back together. Also it’s a movie you can show to kids and older folks.
7) Face it deep down we all enjoy a great love story
I know some people say they don’t but we know you’re lying to us and yourself when you say that. Sure sometimes a happy ending wouldn’t fit in a story but every once in a while people like seeing interesting characters fall for each other.
8) The writing and acting
This movie was very well written it presented a great story taken from the true story that didn’t become a slave to the true story like many biopics do. It didn’t leave audiences thinking “well that’s what happened in real life” but when you compare the movie to the real story you still feel as if you saw that story come to life on film.
9) The setting
This is set in Austria at the beginning of World War 2 as it was in real life. This introduced an interesting setting because it creates a conflict in the movie that is beyond the characters control.
10) Julia Andrews
OMG she is so amazing can you hear her voice in everything it SOOOO AWESOME that they got her in this movie‼‼‼‼‼ SHE IS MARRY FREAKING POPPENS‼‼! In everything even in the princess diaries she was good. Just the fact that she’s in it makes this movie worth the watch.
