The Brighter Side of the 94th Academy Awards

Regardless of what anyone thinks about The Oscars or the controversial slap; Regardless of what anyone thinks about The Oscars or the controversial slap; there are 24 categories that the oscars are presented to. It's a real shame that the news, social media, among other sources are heavily focusing on when Will Smith went on stage and slapped Chris Rock. I hope that one event will not overshadow all the other awards and historic accomplishments.

The Brighter Side of the 94th Academy Awards

☆ Coda won 3 of the 6 Oscar nominations, winning for best Picture, best adapted screen play and best supporting actor. It was the first movie to be nominated from a streaming service, Apple TV+. Troy Kotsur is the 2nd deaf actor to win an Oscar after his wife who won in 1986. It is also the first movie in 89 years to win Best Picture with less than 4 nominations. Coda means: children of deaf adults. I read that "90 percent of children born to deaf parents can hear normally." I haven't seen the film yet, but I really think it would be a good one for anyone to watch.

The Brighter Side of the 94th Academy Awards

I didn't fully watch the show until the following day; I'd seen about a quarter of it and it was crazy to wake up and hear everyone mainly talking about the slap. I was tempted to not even watch the rest because I figured that news kind of overshadowed everything else.

When I did watch it in it's entirety I found that there were some great moments. Kevin Costner was a real classic act when he delivered one of the best speeches I have ever heard. As I was watching, it really struck me how eloquent he is and impeccable with his words.

I thought it was really sweet when Lady Ga Ga helped Liza Minnelli present the Best Picture Academy Award (whispering "I got you"). There were many great acceptance speeches like from Troy Kotsur, Jessica Chastain, Ariana Debose and even Will Smith.

I think it was good that Will Smith apologized for his actions both to all his fellow nominees and the Academy. An apology is only sincere though if the person apologizing is able to take responsibility for their actions, learn from it and prove that they have through their actions and behaviors in the future.

The Brighter Side of the 94th Academy Awards

Over the years the Oscars have changed dramatically from their initial roots, these changes have greatly effected how many now view the Oscars. There's always going to be pros and cons to everything. Not everyone is going to agree about certain stuff, but the end of the day I think it all really boils down to treating oneanother the way we would like to be treated. The world is a better place when people are able to be kind and respectful to oneanother.
