SPOILER ALERT!
I am convinced that Penelope's character is actually super toxic and loves to play the victim card. Yes, she's grown up with some annoying siblings and a mom so consumed with her daughters securing a proper foothold in society (which she basically justifiably explains later in the series), that she ignores her as a human being, but does that give Pen the right to take it out on everyone, people she claims she loves in her friends, neighbors, and future/current husband?
There is a point in which Kate explains to Colin, who has found out about Pen's being Whistledown, that everyone makes mistakes and relationships are work, and I'm like, I agree with that, sure, but then how does one actually justify what Pen has done repeatedly mind you, for her own gain to "protect" Colin from making his own mistakes. Penn has sacrificed his family, him, and her best friend in a gossip column of her own design essentially to ensure Colin comes back to her, often exposing secrets, ironically, that she has no business or right to.
Even when she is discovered, she keeps it up, and then actually has the nerve to tell Colin that he does not know what it's like to be a woman and to have no power in society, therefore this is how she's able to do that. Okay, sure fair (to a point), in this patriarchal society, life was certainly difficult for women who didn't desire to be paraded around in a marriage mart the minute they hit puberty and signed away for money or family affiliation, rather than love, but I draw the line in this whole wannabe feminist speech because her application to what is considered a woman's power, is posting articles anonymously to talk absolute sh*t about everyone and post their personal business for the world to see. Her actions have indeed outed women and destroyed relationships and created scandal...FOR WOMEN! If you think that makes you powerful as a woman, I'm going to take issue with that.
Imagine you're in a relationship with someone and they post on an anonymous Instagram account what a piece of crap you and your family are which gets picked up and spread all over the news, while sitting there smiling and making out with you and professing their love. Who does that? She could have anonymously written about anything. Many female writers during that period did go on to write some of the greatest pieces of literature under nom de plums. The only thing making Pen weak is and was her inability to go out by herself and make her own place in the world because clearly she wasn't hindered by chaperones or some laws of society---her gossip was risking everything.
I'm just not convinced with the whole wrap up with a bow and turnaround of seemingly everybody at the end of this season. I mean what ill effects did Pen suffer from her musings by society? Who would have been cool with knowing who she actually was (look how they treated Cresida after she dropped the fake news of her being Whistledown, she got kicked out of society and even her own home by her family who was being ill treated because of her perceived actions. This just wreaks of delusion and privilege afforded to mainly the Bridgertons, which Pen is now one.
