When you listen to a piece of music, are you able to pick apart the different instruments used?

Say for example an orchestra, or even a regular band, would you be able to fairly accurately distinguish the different instruments used (i. e. guitar, bass, cello, violin, saxophone etc)? And to take it further, would you be able to distinguish between an alto saxophone, soprano sax, tenor sax and baritone sax for example?

I know nothing about instruments so no 😅
however I love listening for harmonies and background vocals. And I can usually hear adlibs that are hard to hear for other people

My grandkids are in a very successful Home Schooler's Band, so yes, I have gotten fairly decent at this. Certainly the broad categories, and at least some of the time the splits such as sop, alto, bari, etc.

I don't think about the instruments when I'm listening to music and I don't know how to distinguish between the instruments you mentioned. I just enjoy the song/piece of music.

I'm able to generally distinguish but not in a very in-depth manner. Mainly due to disinterest. I really care about some instruments more than others.

Yes especially when it comes Rock, Jazz, Caribbean, and pop different versions type.
