Do movies about cursed mummies make narrative sense?

OK we now it goes: someone commits a horrible crime in ancient Egypt and in response they have a curse inflicted on them that causes tremendous pain (usually involving getting mummified alive) but will give them supernatural powers if revived.

But here's the issue, why didn't the pharaoh or some high ranking official have that curse inflicted on them? I mean sure they would endure a painful experience but are you telling me no one thought it would be worth enduring if you would become a demi-god?

They don't make sense because they're told from the monster's perspective. They start with some ruler being mummified, then dying. Then someone breaks into his tomb and steals his stuff, which robs him of it in the afterlife, so he has to come back, repossess his old body, and then hunt down the grave robbers to get his stuff back. Given that they were often buried with mummified pets, too, it's kinda like John Wick, told from the side of the bad guys.

Your proposal doesn't quite work, because the rulers would WANT to head off the afterlife, which was supposed to be a far better place than the world we live in; even if being immortal wouldn't've angered the gods by breaking the cycle of life and death, thus usurping their power (it would've), the pharaoh himself (or herself, for Hapshepsut) wouldn't want to stick around when heaven (essentially) was on the table.

Interestingly, by the time of the Middle Kingdom, people of even the middle classes could be mummified; it was no longer limited to royalty. And that mattered, because in Egyptian theology, the state of your body on Earth affected the state of your body in the afterlife. So if a jackal digs up uncle Imhotep's body and makes off with his tibia, he's going to be hopping around the field of bulrushes. Mummification, which prevents rotting, avoided that- but it DID involve, among other things, removing one's brain, which meant that the mighty pharaonic god-kings would spend their time in the afterlife standing around drooling. Probably better all around for the commoners, though...
