Recent music news revolved around country singer Jason Aldean’s controversial song and video “Try That in a Small Town,” which has been criticized for, among other things, promoting vigilantism.
Here are the lyrics:
Sucker punch somebody on a sidewalk
Carjack an old lady at a red light
Pull a gun on the owner of a liquor store
Ya think it's cool, well, act a fool if ya like
Cuss out a cop, spit in his face
Stomp on the flag and light it up
Yeah, ya think you're tough
Well, try that in a small town
See how far ya make it down the road
Around here, we take care of our own
You cross that line, it won't take long
For you to find out, I recommend you don't
Try that in a small town
Got a gun that my granddad gave me
They say one day they're gonna round up
Well, that shit might fly in the city, good luck
Try that in a small town
See how far ya make it down the road
Around here, we take care of our own
You cross that line, it won't take long
For you to find out, I recommend you don't
Try that in a small town
Full of good ol' boys, raised up right
If you're looking for a fight
Try that in a small town
Try that in a small town
Try that in a small town
See how far ya make it down the road
Around here, we take care of our own
You cross that line, it won't take long
For you to find out, I recommend you don't
Try that in a small town
Try that in a small town
Ooh-ooh

u +1 yThere's no direct threat of violence but its naysayers claim it promotes vigilantism. Truth is, small town people do tend to take care of their own because they usually know each other and they're left on their own. There's nothing racist either expressed or implied, so I don't know what all the hoopla is about. I've heard enough violence and foul racist language in rap and hip hop songs, and even a few Broadway tunes. I think this past week in entertainment there's been something to piss everyone off. Those who lean left are complaining about Aldean's song, while those who lean right are complaining about "wokeness" (whatever the hell that means) in the new live action Barbie movie. Funny thing is complaints about the movie Barbie began early last week by people who hadn't seen the movie since it wasn't in the theaters until yesterday smh.

+1 yI already gave this answer on a different question, but just to reiterate.
Coming from a man who is half black and half white, I listened to this song and read the lyrics. There is NOTHING racist about it.
They are grasping at straws and labeling it as such because of the courthouse the music video was shot in front of. The courthouse has infamy because it was a lynch site back in 1927 or something like that.
Ignoring the fact that Jason grew up in Georgia and lives in Tenessee and the fact Nashville shot the video there because it was close and cheap for budget reasons.
The video centers around the 2020 riots taking place in the cities and the message being not to bring that bullshit to small towns unless you want to get your teeth kicked in. That is what it was about.
Being a guy who grew up in small and rural towns my whole life where neighbors become extended family and a good chunk of my old crew were farm boys, those lyrics are true. Don't screw with our community or you will get your asses whooped. Simple as that.

+1 yI'm not normally a fan of his work. Liked that song though. I've a spent probably have my stateside time in a small town, if not more. We only call the cops to come collect a body since they're not really going to do anything about anything they didn't witness firsthand. Like the saying goes, "don't want no ist don't start no ist."

+1 ydidn't pay attention to the drama... just watched the video. Decent song, whats the problem? It's a good ole boy, southern, consitutional... you mess with my country, my family, my community, you gonna get it... song. Good, let's play that in my neighborhood, at our local events... make it the local football game's theme songs. He could have improved those lyrics, left the gun reference out, but included "my daddy got a hickory paddle, knows how to straighten out a crooked kid, that needs a little somptin' get his life right.".
Scare the other rabbid sob's out of town w that song! "Annie get your gun get your gun get your gun,... take it on the run take it on the run..." kinda like that. Where's the problem there? history...
"Spit on an officer, get your jaw broken, you dumb F"... he needs to adjust the lyrics.
Let's review the songs those "other" people are listening to, then decide if there's a side we want to be on.
This should be the NFL theme song and half time show this year at the toiletbowl... oops I mean... superbowl, ya know, where there's a prostituted teen for 1/10 adults. I made that up, but probably right. Petition NFL to make it happen... lol... can't even play it on radio, that's how scared people are and how distorted our country is.
I'd bet this whole issue falls along political voting lines, not color/race/culture. But training and conditioning.
Maybe I should write a song, make it as offensive as hell, but considerate of both sides. be fun...
what a screwed up country...
Jason, you need a room to stay, we got extra and a couple of guitars to do some jammin'...

p. s. how do you get a ton of clicks and your song heard by 50% of the country. yep... marketing! doesn't give a crap about the other half.

u +1 yIt's not promoting vigilantism. All it's saying is that small towns take care of themselves and each other.

Yeah, that's taking care of themselves. Means that they are vigilantes unless they're all sheriff's deputies or something. A vigilante is a person who acts violently and illegally to enforce what they believe might be the law. Of course, the vigilantes themselves through their actions become criminals too. There is absolutely no excuse for mob justice as many of the January 6th insurrectionists are finding out.

And rap artists do not do this? How many times have you heard mention of shooting a rival with a gat?

I guess liberals don;t like to see this stuff because it makes them look bad.

OMG... I'm so, so sorry for you, I am though absolutely positive that everything will be fine. ❤
I had no idea at all you were that small, however always remember that all nice things come in little packages, and of course you're shortly going to bring a lovely, beautiful little human being into the world. ❤
u +1 yNo, and I don't really feel a strong need to know even though my husband, parents, and in-laws have hinted they'd like to. Everything is progressing fine, and my doctor isn't making a strong argument for a sonogram, not yet anyway. I told them all they'll get what they get. My mom put her hand on my belly and predicts it's going to be a boy lol.
u +1 yLol funny, I'm the one who's pregnant but in a gathering with my husband, parents, and the outlaws I'm the only one not talking about it. It's fun (in a shake my head kind of way) listening to them going on about the baby, the grandchild, the tax deduction, etc. while I have no input.
