Do you sing some songs perfectly and others terrible?

I always thought a good singer is a good singer, but why can't people sing certain songs?

Oh, for sure. I’m a pretty decent singer if I can sing with a little bass in my voice, like Eddie Vedder or Darius Rucker. I do a mean Let Her Cry at karaoke, haha. Not as good as the pros, obviously, but I can carry a tune and get compliments from strangers the rest of the night. Works for my falsetto too. Did Reasons by Earth, Wind, & Fire doing the high pitch the whole way, and the DJ stopped and played the real song for a second at the end, and he goes “I just wanted to play this so you all appreciate what he just did, he wasn’t goofing off, that’s really how the song goes, and he crushed it.”😂

Other stuff that’s in the higher tenor ranges, not good for me. Like I’d love to be able to do My Own Worst Enemy by Lit for karaoke, but my voice can’t do the very-important “please tell me whyyyyyyyyyy-yyyyyyyyy…. the car is in the front yaaaarrrrrddddddd, and iiiii’mmmmm…sleepin’ with my clothes onnnnnnn…” part, that’s where my voice starts cracking.

I think everyone, even excellent singers, just have a set range. I saw The Main Ingredient in concert, an old 70s R&B act, and the lead singer was referencing some gospel song, and he started singing it, but he goes “nahhh, I can’t do that kind of music, my voice don’t go that way.” So even pros can just do what they do.

I'm a good singer... but I would not go below or above my range

I like to sing but I’m not good. I can hold certain notes but my voice is to breath-y and I personally don’t like how I sound.(still not great). My throat gets tight/strained and for some reason I can’t sing the correct tempo unless I’m singing along with it.
