Why is Horizon: An American Saga flopping in theaters?

This is a good question and there are multiple answers all of which likely contributed.

First, it went up against "A Quiet Place: Day One" which was highly anticipated including having a Super Bowl ad.

Second, it's a western. They just are not all that popular.

Third, going in, audiences knew this was going to be a 4-movie arc. When you do something like that, it should be streamed like a mini-series so it can be binge-watched. Back in 1977, "Star Wars" was very popular, but it was self-contained story. No sequels were guaranteed nor fully planned when "Star Wars" was released. Had 20th Century Fox announced that "Star Wars" would be spread-out over 4 movies, it might not have been so popular. Movies are escapism and people like the have the story have a conclusion in the movie. You can only get away with this on rare exception, like the Harry Potter movies because each one was based on a book that the audience of kids (and many adults) would have read before each movie. Or, back to "Star Wars", because "Star Wars" was already so popular, when "The Empire Strikes Back" was released in 1980, it was OK to have a cliff-hanger because people just wanted to see that movie so badly and, at the time, there was only going to be one more movie that would end the trilogy.

movie theaters in general don't do too well compared to streaming now, that's where most of the money is made, so they don't worry about opening weekend kind of numbers anymore
