Often yes. I'd say usually.
My wife is hard of hearing so she prefers subtitles.
Subtitles can help when actors are whispering or murmuring, or when there is noise or soundtrack while they are speaking. You don't miss any of what they are saying.
The problem is, subtitles are now done with AI, and AI hears sounds but not context. It doesn't understand what words mean. So it says some of the most absurd things. It's like some of the funny results of autocorrect in texts. And I see it all the time.
In one example “We’re not orcs, we’re hobbits,” translated into “We are not oaks, we are hobiks.”
Only for very short passages where I can't understand what they said but, even CC gets it wrong quite often so, that's no help at all, either.
And I fucking CAN'T STAND being FORCED to have it in all these new YT videos!! ESPECIALLY in the MIDDLE of the fucking picture!!
Depends on the movie. Sometimes the mixing on movies is terrible but its still a good movie so I'll put subtitles on then. If there's any mixed languages going on I'll turn them on. Like I've been watching the Daryl Dixon spin off of the walking dead which is set in France so I've turned the subtitles on.
My husband does. Drives me crazy. Though my husband watched interstellar recently. Most of the movie we couldn't hear what anyone was saying and we turned it up so we could and then were deafened by the music score.
Yes, I often watch movies with subtitles on, especially when they're in a language I'm not fluent in. It enhances my understanding and allows me to appreciate the original dialogue delivery. Subtitles can also help catch subtle nuances in performances, making the viewing experience richer. Whether it's a Hollywood classic or an Asian film, subtitles bridge any language gap beautifully! 🎬📚

I did it few years back as watched movies in English and I didn't understand phonetically everything. Meanwhile I understand even an Australian or Scottish whiskey lover without subtitles.
English isn't complicated but it's not phonetic like other languages.
I don't often have confidence to watch what I watch subtitleless, accommodating for shifts in accents, registers, speech rate and language level without subs? Come on, give me a break lol
With French and Spanish movies I like to also read the French and Spanish subtitles to stay fluent. With English and German movies, no.
Damn, fluent in 4 languages is crazy
Fully fluent in two, semi-fluent in two.
I don't know japanese well enough to watch it without subs.
Only if they're in a language I don't understand (voted yes). Pro-tip for new parents, though: turning subtitles on for children's programs helps them learn to read.
besides the obvious, foreign ones... yes
sometimes I got subtitles on, and the volume/audio very low... lol
We almost always have subtitles on. Sometimes, it's hard to understand what someone says, subtitles make it easier.
if it's in a foreign language yea, or else no
No, I don't.
It's distracting.
I watch Korean and other language movies and dramas so I need subtitles.
Foreign films are the best films 99% of the time.
Only if it’s a movie at the movie theater, I’ve done that a couple times but no why would I want to put subtitles on my own home TV?
Only Godzilla Minus One or Demon Slayer. The English versions are absolute DONKEY DICK
Frequently. I'm told I'm hard of hearing. So I put on subtitles so I can read rather than turning the volume all the way up.
Yes! And then I read a lot of people do this. I thought I was the only one.
Only foreign language ones especially Spanish, because they help me to try to lear the language
Only…and I’m adamant about this…only…when it’s a language I don’t know.
Yes otherwise I can’t hear it 🎥 🎬
I do this because it’s easier to tune out my hearing than it is my vision. Get what I mean?
Yes, but I live in Japan so I don't think I am the target audience here.
Hearing damage from military training.
No, I just crank up the sound.
Thank God I'm not alone on that. I like German porn. But I don't have a baker's fuck of a clue what they're saying. So I just crank up the volume. Then it makes sense.
No j can still see and hear grateful 🥲😞
At home no. In class with students yes
Hardly ever, I find them very annoying.
Generally yes.
Yeah, if they’re foreign language
Only when I eat chips in a bag, otherwise no.
Yes. Have you got kids?
