What is your View on Ballet and Opera?

Question

I once knew an ex ballerina, and I was interested in going with her to a Ballet. I've also never been to an Opera! What is your opinion, and if you have been to either event, can you please describe your experience?

My mother made sure I had a good taste for the arts by taking me to see lots of theater shows, operas, and ballets from a young age. As I’ve grown older and been through a theater scholarship where I was made to build sets and interact with cast members, I now even more greatly appreciate the insane amount of work that goes into these performances. I know the sets on that stage took weeks to build by hand, the costumes are all custom-fitted over another series of weeks, that’s not even mentioning the intense physical labor that goes into learning to sing opera or dance ballet in those shoes. If you ever look at a ballerina’s feet outside of those shoes, you see how mangled they are, covered in blisters with broken nails, and 90% of the time when they're not on stage, they’re fighting back vomit from how much pain their body is in, or sitting their feet in an ice bath to try and keep going. It takes fucking WORK to look so delicate, not to mention doing ballet from a young age permanently alters your body. Ballerinas, when standing up straight, always stand in first position. They can’t help it, that’s just how their legs are now permanently turned.

So yeah, I appreciate the hell out of the arts.

I love ballet. Opera, not so much. However, there are two operas that I do like and have attended. Peter and the Wolf and Madame Butterfly. I grew up attending all kinds of performing arts events with my family and will be continuing the tradition with my own children.

I've seen Don Giovanni in Prague, which incidentally where it was premierred in the 1780s. I was in one of these boxes. Which is only correct being the English nobleman that I am :P I've been to lots of classical concerts. Not really into ballet. Opera, well, it's hit or miss depending on what it is. Even Don Giovanni, which is thoroughly intertaining, a masterpiece, could do with some judicious editing by modern standards. The last hour needs some serious cuts, as sacrilegious as it is. My mood just changes. A few weeks ago I saw a Mahler Symphony, and despite it being one of my favourite composers I just wasn't feeling it.

I have attended a production of the opera Faust, by Gounod, and i have seen selections from Fidelio (Beethoven’s only opera) and Carmen, by Bizet. I am not really interested in ballet but have watched at least 10 productions of the Nutcracker, by Tchaikovsky. All were very enjoyable.

While I enjoy listening to classical music occasionally, as it helps me relax and focus and nourishes the soul, I'm not a huge fan of ballet and opera. For some reason I'm not able to relate to either of them. When I was younger, I actually used to take ballet classes for a short time and I did terribly at it, but performed well in Bollywood or traditional Indian dances. I guess I prefer more energetic, or rhythm heavy styles. While I do appreciate and have a lot of respect for these people and the years of hard practice and work they've put into perfecting their craft, I don't think I would be able to sit through an entire show. As for opera, it comes off as a bit pompous, the way they sing in vibrato and the whole cadence of opera singing. It's like nails on a chalkboard for me

They are both very expensive, and rightly so given their production costs. I have attended both, including Carmen in Vienna and Swan Lake in Canberra, among others,. Yes they are both magnificent artforms. I'm not in a hurry to attend more given the cost. But I do buy my daughter tickets from time to time.

Where I grew up, almost all the girls took ballet lessons. I did too, but after I got interested in other hobbies I stopped ballet. However it did give me good flexibility.
