Probably Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon. It's an "alternate history" mostly set in modern times but with flashbacks to WWII. it's a hefty book - around 1000 pages - but he's an amazing writer and it flew by the first time I read it.

It also connects to a prequel trilogy of books that are collectively called The Baroque Cycle that I believe have since been split into 6 volumes. It features ancestors of the characters from Cryptonomicon in the 1660s through early 1700s.

Lots of historically true facts and people blended with some fiction to tie the stories together.

If you are interested in the author, there is a much shorter book that is still quite accessible and shows off his writing style that I recommend to new readers. It's called The Diamond Age, and it's set in the future when nano technology is common, but poor people only have access to basic items (free), while the rich have the most advanced access.

A wealthy grandfather has a high-end book custom made for his granddaughter to teach her to be an independent thinker and self-sufficient. The book is designed to imprint on her at around age 5 and teach her from then on, essentially via AI. The problem is that the upper middle class engineer who designed the book secretly makes a second copy for his own daughter, but gets mugged and the book eventually falls into the hands of a poor, abused 5 year old girl in a trailer trash situation, who the book imprints on, and teaches her how to thrive and escape her situation.

"Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta.
She was Lo, plain Lo, in the morning, standing four feet ten in one sock. She was Lola in slacks. She was Dolly at school. She was Dolores on the dotted line. But in my arms she was always Lolita."

Have you ever read more perfect prose? And English was not Nabokov's native language.

I’m drawn to novels that unravel mysteries n challenge the mind, like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie’s masterpieces..

I love stories that make me think strategically, almost like a chess game, pushing me to think out of the box while appreciating clever moves n hidden patterns.. 😎☕

Hmmm probably Alien Phalanx because it's gory and unique in it's world building. That or book one of This Would Be Paradise. An actual fun look at an apocalypse with an absolute smartass as the lead.

  • One of my personal favorites is "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern. It's a beautifully crafted story that blends magic, romance, and mystery. Morgenstern's writing is vivid and enchanting, creating an immersive world that feels both magical and real. The dynamic between the two protagonists and the intricate plot keep you engaged, making it a book you can't put down. The atmosphere and imagery are so rich; it's like a painting in literary form! 🎨📖✨

As far as I can recall, it'd be, "The Real Animal House" by Chris Miller. He's always been my fave writer so, anything he's written is usually gonna be great!! Of all of his stories that I ever read, I think the only one that bored me even the slightest bit was, "Is It Still Called, "Playing Post Office" When The Mucilage Is Real And Sticks To Your Tongue". MAYBE, "Stacked Like Me" would also be like that with me.
Another book I laughed my ass off at was, "Roger's Profanisaurus"
As for reference books, one that I helped write, "R & B Indies" by Bob McGrath and "The Beatles' Recording Sessions" by Mark Lewishon and another I co-wrote about the life and recording history of Dickie Goodman.

The Book Thief, I like the perspective the story is told in, as well as the setting.

The inspiration for Blade Runner and of Gary Numan's album Replicas (which was released under his band name Tubeway Army, even though they were no longer a punk band).
