How do you feel when you tell a joke and no one laughs?

I am known among my friends as being a fairly funny person. But occasionally I will say something that I think is funny and no one laughs. Usually I just re-evaluate it and consider not saying something like that again. But also it could be that it just went over their heads but the joke might work among other people.

Like Steve Martin's joke about cracking a joke at a plumber's convention, but it didn't work with an audience of people who weren't plumbers. LOL

Low‑key soul crushing 😂. I usually do that awkward little smile, look around, and pretend I was “only kidding anyway.” Inside it’s like, wow, tough crowd. But I’ve also learned to laugh at myself, make a follow‑up joke about how bad the first one was, and move on. Comedy is trial and error 🤷🏻‍♀️✨

It was obviously a bad joke, or a very technical one told to the wrong audience.

Maybe I'll try another joke.

Here's a joke told to a convention of physicists.

An atom walks into a bar. (Already, some in the audience laugh, it's ridiculous, atoms don't have legs.)

Bartender says to the atom, "What's up buddy, you look sad."

Atom replies, "I just lost an electron."

Bartender asks, "Are you positive?" (Wild audience laughter)

You gotta play it off like it wasn't funny to you either, like you were saying it out of habit, not like you were saying a joke, if it looks like you are looking for and waiting for it laugh it will just feel even more lame 😂

That's the story of my life. People don't laugh when I want them to and laugh when I wasn't trying to be funny! I stopped caring lol I'll laugh at myself.

Just like what still-alive said, I feel flexible in such a situation. In my case, what truly helps is to use bad jokes, when you repeatedly use humor consisting in bad jokes, it trains you to perform self-mockery. That self-mockery makes you immune to awkwardness and shame

I would feel like I was going to pee my pants telling myself to stop stop I'm going to pee shut up oh my God that's so funny I'm going to pee my pants I'd be on the ground laughing so hard just watching everybody look at me they would start laughing I would be yelling shut the fuck up I'm going to be my pants hahaha that's so funny I would need Kleenex I would be laughing so hard

Nothing much. They didn't get it or they're mindset was so different they wouldn't even think it was funny anyway. Im usually alone on the job. Everyone's world revolves around their trucks, women, some sports team they follow, booze, sometimes, various illegal activities they're into or their friend got arrested for. Often they sing the praises of some criminal of other or talk about his exploits. Pretty boring stuff, nothing you could realy connect with.
