Was Madonna’s 2026 VMA Artist of the Year win earned or rigged in favor of a legacy act?

I've been seeing a massive amount of drama online following the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards tonight, where Madonna took home the biggest honor of the night by winning Artist of the Year. A lot of people are completely outraged and insist she shouldn’t have won it, saying the trophy should have absolutely gone to a newer artist who is defining this generation instead of a legacy act.

Madonna ended up dominating the entire night and winning seven trophies total. During the broadcast, I noticed this female artist named PinkPantheress—who I guess is one of the newer stars out right now—looking visibly upset with tears in her eyes and looking incredibly disappointed on camera.

The general consensus among critics is that this award should have gone to a newer, defining artist of the current generation. Mainstream nominees like Sabrina Carpenter, Ariana Grande, or even a rising breakout star had massive cultural years and arguably pushed the daily music landscape forward much more than a legacy act. Many are arguing that giving the top slot to a veteran who debuted over 40 years ago feels like the music industry is safely leaning into nostalgia and star-chasing instead of elevating the future of pop music. Instead, a lot of corners of the internet are claiming the entire award show was rigged to favor old star power, and people are even attacking how Madonna looks, talking crazy saying it’s not the 1980s anymore and that she’s simply too old to be sweeping these awards over the youth.

What do you all think about this? Do you think the VMAs were rigged to hand Madonna a legacy victory, or do you think her massive Confessions II comeback era genuinely earned her the title of Artist of the Year? Was it right for newer stars like PinkPantheress to feel passed over, or are people just hating on the Queen of Pop because of her age?

A. It was 100% rigged: Newer artists like Sabrina Carpenter or PinkPantheress deserved it, and the show relies too much on old nostalgia.

B. She completely earned it: Her Confessions II era was a massive comeback, and she proved she is still the ultimate Queen of Pop.

C. The age comments are unfair: People are just being ageist and hateful about how she looks instead of focusing on her music and talent.

D. I only care about the drama: I'm just here for the messy internet reactions and seeing the other artists look disappointed.

i usually stay quiet about these kinds of things, but obviously i would have very much to say about this, in my circles at least, but the main point being, a 68-year-old has-been, and let's be very clear, she is a has-been, and “has been” for a very long time, being nominated for and winning far more music and video awards than top, top commercial artists who are 45 years younger than her, which is more years than she's been around in the music business, is unqualifiedly outrageous

her resurgence is nothing more than a novelty, and where it matters, which i follow extremely closely every day, in streams, in downloads, in views, in likes, in follows, and in actual airplay, which is all she had in “her day,” her numbers are not only below those of the other artists, they are literally, literally non-existent

Grammys does not stand for Grandma, and we will see you there, where you will not even be a blip on the radar

Right now it's 67% because people are ageist and her talent.
I believe that she has earned it. She has proven it many times through the years.

@sage2021 it has nothing to do with ageism, it's the commercial music industry, which is a youthful industry, not by design, but by public response, and as i said, i know what's happening in the industry on a daily basis, and it's not her. Current awards, such as the ones she won, should match current performance, and hers definitely do not. There are plenty of legacy awards to honor lifetime achievement. She will be destroyed at the Grammys, which are the only awards that matter

She's not a has been, her last album got to no1 in many countries and she can still sell out stadiums.

@Badtobad we're on tour right now so we all met about this at craft services this morning because we lost in categories where Madonna won, and we always take that kind of head-to-head into account when assessing our position, and we discount liberally for that

but getting to #1 in “many countries” is not at all the same as getting to #1 or even into the top 10 in the U. S. in those very specific demos i listed earlier. there are only a few other countries that count, and she's not performing well in those, including one in which she very much should be. and she is not selling out stadiums, we have all the numbers right here down to the penny (and we sold out all of our stadiums in under 22 minutes). we know what we're talking about because we have to live and work in this world every day, and it's one of the reasons i keep normally quiet about this with outsiders, but today i answered a very knowledgeable question about it

truly i cannot help it that older people have different beliefs about this, we don't cater to those demos because the market is just not there, and we would be throwing away money and significant artistry to do so

you are very welcome to your opinion, but that does not make it factually correct in the commercial music industry

It's a fan voted category. Fans don't care about talent, it's a tribal thing. Madonna still has a huge fanbase apparently. Not sure we needed to see so much of those horrible spindly legs.

as for Madonna... other than a couple of memes, I have not heard anything about her so... this confuses me a bit, lol
