What TV show started off absolutely epic but slowly lost what made it great?

A show that had incredible storytelling, amazing characters, and so much potential, but somewhere along the way, it started going downhill…what show comes to mind, and when do you think it started falling out.. do you still watching it?

For me, it’s The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Dexter. I’ve finished all of Game of Thrones, stopped watching The Walking Dead a long time ago, and I’m still keeping up with Dexter…

Game of Thrones is my ultimate heartbreak 🥲 It was perfection up to around season 4–5, then after they passed the books the pacing went wild, character arcs felt rushed, and by season 8 it had lost its soul, especially Dany and Jaime’s writing.

Also, Westworld started brilliantly, then got too convoluted and lost its emotional core. Still love rewatching only the early seasons of both. 🎬💔

This happened to a lot of shows in the mid-2000s. Heroes was one, it had a whole new idea about superheroes with cool characters but the writers absolutely destroyed the story, with the third and final season being a complete disappointment. But the one you hear about the most was Lost. It was a fantastic show that rocked television with it's blockbuster first two seasons, but yeah, by the fifth and sixth seasons it was going downhill pretty bad.

I personally still love the show regardless of it, and as I've watched it again and again, themes and storylines make a little more sense to me each time, and I think that's happening with more people as well as they revisit the show more carefully. Back in the mid-2000s people were more desperate to just get to the bottom of the story, find out what the DHARMA Initiative really was, etc. and missed a lot of stuff that they may be realizing now.

Although to be fair, both shows were victims of the massive Hollywood writer's strike that happened back then, so that probably explains (in part) why they would pick back up after a long hiatus with really bad ideas.

Yeah.. I remember “Heroes” it was good.. I’ve never watched “Lost” tho, I was more focused on horror and crime shows... but yeah I agree on your analysis..

@ElenaLena I highly encourage you to watch Lost when you're ready to dedicate the time. The first season was the best hook of course but if you stick with it to the end you might enjoy the story. And the further you go with it, like around season 3 to 5, pay close attention to details and you won't "get lost" like so many of us did back in the day when we were impatient with the story.

I would absolutely agree with Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead. Dexter I felt held up fine. It got milked a bit and the novelty wore off but I don't feel the episodes themselves got worse.

To not just piggyback. Hmm. Remember Westworld? Was all the rage for a year or so and then fell off the face of the earth and everyone seemingly dropped it.

Yeah.. West world i stopped watching it as well.. it was horrible at the end and I think they even cancelled it

Interesting, I always felt Dexter never missed a beat all the way till the end.


I would say many shows shouldn’t have had multiple seasons
Most teen dramas suffer from that.
Riverdale, 13 reasons why, all the stuff like that.
Hospital or workplace dramas as well.
House MD, The Resident, Chicago Fire.
And the old CW superhero shows
Arrow, Flash, Smallville, and so on.
And of course you have Vikings

I would say Dexter the last season was good.. but it has started to lose its charm a few seasons ago.. I think another season of it won’t help the show

I watched Dexter, but it got old, same with the Walking Dead Series. I liked the Army of Darkness series with Ash.

A couple people stole my answer with “Lost”. So i’m going to mention “Being Human” (UK). Absolutely brilliant concept and masterfully worked for the first few seasons, but they just waited too long to hang it up. The US version fixed that, and that’s the main reason that i rate the US version above its predecessor.

he Walking Dead was good at first. I think it was the first 5 seasons, I can't remember for sure. Once the brought in Negan's group, it ruined the series. I always disliked Rick though from season one onwards.

I tried checking out GoT, but the r4p3 scene early on was too much so I never watched past that.

Oh. Gee. Almost all of them. Starting with Happy Days jumping the shark. The Simpsons. Then there are your one season wonders. Prison Break. Mindhunter. Lost made it all of one episode before losing its lustre.

Even Seinfeld and The Wire had a blah season or two.
