I Don't Need To Throw A Glass of Water In Your Face

Reality TV would have you believing that whenever a woman gets mad at her best friend or her boyfriend or some random on the street, she has to slap him, or throw water in his face, or create a more drama filled situation than actually exists, but I don't need to throw a glass of water in your face.

I've never lived a drama filled life because I simply have not invited those type of people to inhabit my air space. I've known my best friend for nearly 20 years now, and we have had exactly two major fights in our entire friendship. We did not have loud angry public hashings out, we did not scream, we didn't punch each other, or pull each other's hair, or go to social media to talk crap about the other; we just talked it all out and in both cases briefly parted ways before realizing we needed each other back in each others lives and like adults, we recognized that the only way to do that was to talk to each other and sort our situations out because our friendship was and is very important to us.

The same has gone towards the boyfriends I've had in my life. Granted, there are some people in really bad situations that can occur in a relationship and I'm not denying that myself or others have not been royally screwed by someone and gotten really angry, but even in those situations I've managed to walk away and just end things peacefully in my adult years because all of that anger, and frustration, and energy is just being absolutely wasted on someone who doesn't care about you enough not to hurt you.

It's not easy to pack up and move on especially if that person meant something to you, but violence and pettiness isn't and never will solve the problems in those relationships. I don't need to cause a scene in a restaurant and throw water and call him names because at that point I probably intend to come back to this restaurant in the future with a new more awesome boyfriend with my dignity still very much intact, and I just feel like you've gotta be able to handle these things in a private manner and learn not to get sucked into someone elses destructive vortex.

I Don't Need To Throw A Glass of Water In Your Face

I've really started to notice more and more in life as I climb up the age ladder, that the bull just isn't worth the time and effort. It's so draining and time consuming. It is why I've managed to really be selective with the people I invite into my world. I remember in college having this conversation with an old roommate who had this magnificent ability to really not hold onto any anger or drama related to situations that had happened to her in life. She was a master of zen. She would just channel the energies into doing positive things for herself like working out, or volunteering, or picking up a new hobby and release the negative energy out into the universe.

Drama filled people aren't created over night. Someone doesn't just decide yesterday that they are going to be the sort who will call attention to themselves, and bring an entire room down, and cry and scream nonsensically, and belittle someone in public largely for attention purposes. I chose to be around those in friendships and relationships who are on the same wavelength, who know how to adult, and handle their business without becoming spectacles of themselves and inviting more and more drama in.

I occasionally will see a show or see how other people are interacting, and I find that, it's not that I am lucky to have the friendships or relationships I have, it's that I've invested in people who understand that positive healthy relationships are not guaranteed. You have to work to maintain them. It's not that everything is just going to work out for you all the time, it's that when things are good you work to maintain the good and when they are bad, you decide whether you want to live a life where you're constantly going to be the glass of water thrower, or you're going to swallow your pride, your ego, your own bullsh*t, and work through situations and find solutions to your problems that don't end in them just festering over time and getting worse. It's back to the basics of all of those fundamentals of communication, mutual respect, caring, kindness, and giving your time and love to the people in your life.
