What It's Like To Be The Single One Among My Taken Friends

I have two best friends and both of them currently have boyfriends. We are three of us in our friendship circle (er, five if you include the boyfriends) and everything has been really jolly and, sometimes, complicated ever since.

What It's Like To Be The Single One Among My Taken Friends

What it's like to be the single one among my taken friends:

1. I listen to tales regarding milestones.

Being in the friendship circle, I listen to my best friends' experiences and milestones such as:

The first date;

The first time intertwining hands in public;

The mini-dates and actual dates;

Surprises and gifts; and,

"Monthsaries." (This is a monthly celebration for being together and it is prevalent here. They keep telling about this, so I just listen to their sentiments.)

2. I'm the consultant of the squad.

"Can you help me with this situation?", and, "He isn't responding. Can he possibly be with another girl?", are some of the questions (and delusions) that I hear from them.

On a side note, I always contribute input whenever they're mystified with:

What to wear;

How to deal with jealousy;

Etc.

3. I try my best to help them in regulating and balancing their priorities.

While I do not have a direct influence with the decisions of my friends, I provide them with reasonable stances to balance their preoccupations so that other priorities will be paid the attention deserved when they get too "carried away" with their love life. There are times when their conflicts get too personal, making the both of them feel distraught to the point when I can no longer relate to them anymore.

Sometimes, they get carried away with their romantic lives so much to the point that they overlook school, be it academics or extra-curricular activities that can boost their competence in school.

When times like that occurs, I ensure that:

They pass requirements on time; and,

They attain passing grades in all of their subjects.

4. I am always aware of what's happening with them.

Both of them are like broadcasters, except they're keeping me up-to-date with their occurrences in life with their frequent messages and chances of talking about their lives.

5. When both of them are busy with their romantic life, I spend time by doing other things.

There is this one day when both of them are on their lovey-dovey bonding moments and I had no one to go to the library with me. I used the time productively to review for the midterm exams.

This is one benefit of being single, I believe. You have more time on your hands.

6. Friends playfully tease me in getting a boyfriend.

This does happen to me and, thank heavens, it's not frequently brought out as a topic to be discussed. They're not necessarily imposing peer pressure but mere comparison.

They would think of purely hypothetical scenarios that will probably happen to me and to our friendship circle.

Not pressuring me to have one is what makes me love my friends for who they are.

7. I witness two healthy relationships in action.

As a friend, I am happy for my friends that are experiencing their respective interpersonal achievements in their lives.

I get along with their boyfriends really well and I would say that they're really amazing people who deserve the company of my friends.

8. I learn from my friends' experiences.

Why wouldn't I? I have been exposed too much!

I have learned that dating involves sacrifice, understanding, and compromises.

My friends make their relationship work by exerting effort, giving time, and embracing differences. This is long-term discipline, I believe; if both parties duly comply, it would yield into something fulfilling.

What It's Like To Be The Single One Among My Taken Friends

Here are some of the questions I remember (and I find weird) that has been asked to me before. Here are also the gist of my responses.

#1 - "Don't you feel left behind?"

Yes, I do when you're referring to the experience of having a significant other.

No, I don't feel that I am left behind when it comes to maintenance of close friendship ties.

#2 - "Are you having a crush on any of your best friends' boyfriends?"

Long answer: That is a very disturbing question. I do not develop crushes easily, especially for the significant people of my friends. Yes, they may have the looks and they're easy to get along with yet I just don't find them attractive at all. Acknowledgement is nice but when you overdo it, that is when you'd be spotted and interrogated for chances of harboring unreciprocated love.

Short answer: No, I haven't and I will never have.

#3 - "Are you comfortable being the 'odd one out'?"

Odd one out? I never knew about that.

#4 - "Have you felt jealousy with your friends?"

I have, actually. Their happiness is irreplaceable ever since they have been in a relationship.

That's all.

Thank you for reading. :D
