Reasons People Get Bullied at School

I think its quite common with many people to suffer with bullying i was bullied pretty bad at school and at the time i never knew why but i think as you get older you sort of learn more about people and there reasons for doing so..

You're different

Being different is probably the biggest reason most people get bullied if you stand out

and in there opinion (in not a good way) then its pretty likely you will end up being in the firing line

wearing clothes people consider strange.. having behavior people think is unusual.. is a target to getting abuse.. i was always usual at school and i know this was likely the main reason i got bullied i never thought i was or saw myself like that but now looking back at some of my behaviour i understand why i might have been picked on.

You seem a easy target

Bullys are weak pussys who usually always work in packs and rarely alone.. how often do you see a bully picking on someone who is stronger and more capable than they're? Never... bullys only targets are people who they at least "assume" can not defend themselves.. because otherwise they wouldn't do it.. i remember a girl who 6 months or so at my school would pick on me daily make horrible comments and snide remarks constantly try put me down.. i would just let it happen until one day i blew when she held her finger up at me from a car.. it just enraged me and made me super annoyed the next day i pinned her up against the rule and said "you better not fucking do that to me ever again" and that literally was enough for it to stop.. and she never did it again and started being nice to me and giving me compliments after that..(which was completely fake) and made me realize how pathetic most bullys really are... and made me realize maybe ignoring was not the best policy after all.. just scare them and then they stop.. in my case anyway.

You having learning difficulties

This one is pretty bad and shows how weak and pathetic bullys really are.. that they pick out people who already have problems and issues and make these people feel even worse.. the amount of people i remember at school getting picked on because of this is awful.. making cruel comments.. punching them.. just being abusive and nasty because they knew they could get away with this and the people would not fight back.

Being unpopular

If you already have a lack of friends and people around you.. then this will also draw in the bullys..

bullys will pick on people who seem vulnerable and people who they know they can get away with bullying so if they notice someone has a lack of friends.. makes you a target for them to attack you in some way.. because they know that you won't have any friends having your back or defending you so is easier prey for them.

They're jealous of you

I'd say this case is probably a little more rare but sometimes people will bully you because they actually envy you and what you have.. i remember seeing a few stories online of some what i would consider really pretty girls who to me was pretty obvious the girls that were picking on them were just jealous.. and bullying these girls and putting them down probably just made them feel better about themselves and made the girl less of a threat to them... some people will just hate you because you make them feel insecure and they are jealous.

Please Remember Bullys Are ALL Insecure. . . or they'd have no reason to bully to begin with.

They ALL Get Enjoyment From Peoples Misery.

Bullying also can happen to adults.. and in the work place.. but i think school is where it seems to be the most common.. if anyone ever bullys you please remember to always defend yourself.

I went to a crap school for middle school and got bullied because I was the good kid, the educated kid, and the kid that just wanted to be your friend. Apparently that was a problem. The school I went to that one year, was basically a temporary housing unit for the future criminals of America. It was awful, but all this, 'you should fight back,' some say, is kind of missing the point.

Rather than deal with the bully, we put it on the bullied that they should then become violent in order to solve the problem which creates more problems. An eye for and eye just leaves the whole world blind. Had I physically fought back, I would have regretted that 10 fold because I had strict parents who were very concerned with getting me out of that one school (which they did, was only there a year), and getting me into a more respectable school which I would never have gotten in with any type of record. My new school was zero tolerance. It made a world of difference for me to have educators who really enforced school rules, to have a school with very active parents, and a school that constantly re-enforced and rewarded good behavior, not kept the bad going by ignoring the bullies or their actions.

What I went through for just a year is tip of the iceberg for what kids go through today. They get it 24/7 with the internet and there is no relief or a teacher or parent who can guard against it all. I wouldn't know how to tell this generation to handle it because it just seems relentless now.

Yeah... I also am not sure I agree with this "fight back and they stop" idea. I don't think that's always true, and with the young people we have on GAG... someone can try that and have it backfire. Like you said, you could be in high school and get expelled and not be able to get into the college of your dreams because that expulsion is on your record (I know this would have been my biggest concern). Or you could try standing up to the wrong person, and the situation could escalate out of control because of that. Nowadays, bullies will put you in a coma or bring a gun or knife to school on your @ss, or get a gang of people and jump you and put that video on the internet, if you "cross" them. The way people act with people they have "beef" with today is completely unthinkable... it is not how it was in the 80s and 90s when I was getting harassed at school.

Really, adults at schools and managers/supervisors and human resources at work just need to do their damn jobs.

The reality is, if we are teaching young adults to then transition into the world of adulthood, you know what happens when someone starts a fight at work in front of everyone, or starts a brawl in the club, or wants to beef in the dorms... they get fired, they get the cops called on them and kicked out, and they get expelled from school. Why do parents waste their breath explaining over and over again to children that war is not the answer, that blood for blood for blood is not the answer, that fighting is wrong, if when these principals are challenged, they then suddenly flip and say, okay, now fight. The same goes for teachers. You tell the kids not to fight, but then turn a blind eye to it. I am living proof that when teachers care, when you have a system in place that in no way encourages fighting or turns a blind eye, education becomes priority number one, and kids don't fear coming to school or go off and commit suicide or...

What are you going to say to the other parents who come to you because your child has shot up the school because no one would hear them out or did anything? And like you said, fighting these days is extreme and violent and isn't just someone getting somewhat roughed up after school, it's kids being stabbed to death on camera for views. You even dared raise a fist at my high school or second middle school, and that was it. They expelled you, first offense, if proven guilty and they sent you to an "alternative school." That is quite the incentive not to fight and just go to school what you're there to go to school for... to freaking get an education! Remember that world? Gosh, it just boggles the mind.

I can relate to "being different" and "they're jealous of you".

When I was in 8th grade, I changed custody with my parents and moved from the suburbs to urban Long Beach, CA, which is considered a rough area.

As a black kid raised in the burbs, that didn't listen to hip-hop nor speak any slang/ebonics, kids (mostly black kids) would make fun of me and talk shit (not much physical bullying) because I was different than them. Then I grew to realize this also happened because I carried myself in high regard confidence-wise and cared about doing well in my classes... and these people wanted to 'take me down a peg' out of self-loathing.

I had to fight a kid (and get suspended) to end the cycle... so worth it! Even though I wasn't universally embraced after that, people stopped talking shit.

My senior year of highschool, this kid the grade below us started a white supremacy movement. At first I thought it was a joke but there really were people getting bullied, they showed up to the football games with signs and threatened people. The kid pretty much started a gang.

His brother hung out with my group during lunch and he heard me call his brother a punk and he made a whole stink about it but I told him, "sorry dude, your brother's an asshole"

So a couple days later the dude approaches me when I was with my group he brought 2 guys and he just circled around trying to be threatening. I thought it was so stupid I had to stop myself from laughing.

Then he started talking to me. I was sitting down so he stood real tall right in front of me. I tried to look as calm as I could but the fact was scared as fuck.

He said something like "I heard you said I was a pussy and that you could beat me up"

Again, I couldn't help but laugh, I remember thinking what a little bitch his brother was for twisting my words so I told him you can't believe everything you hear around here. So he just goes "I thought so" and goes to walk away. So I stood up and go "What I actually said was that you're a weak-ass punk who picks on people you know won't fight back and you're a loser" Word for word. And he asked me if I was gonna fight him and I told him that he was a loser for starting a war against "all 3 black kids who go to our school" and that I wasn't gonna unless I had to.

And that's when he turned around and looked to his two guys who were hanging back and that's when I understood that this kid wasn't as bad as I thought he was. Those guys behind him egging him on were the ones who were really in control of the whole thing.

He never laid a finger on me and you know what, shortly after that confrontation. The bullying started to go away. There could have been a lot of reasons for it. I don't know if I had anything to do with it. I like to think I did. But you gotta stand up to people like that, and you gotta be able to love even your enemies. If we duked it out that day, I bet everything would have gotten worse. I'm glad cuz, I heard that guy used to be a really nice person before he got big.

There's only one reason it happens:

I took a lot of shit growing up. A LOT. I didn't have the right last name, my first name (which I stopped going by when I was 18, so I have barely heard it in 20 years) made it easy for them, I was smarter than everyone in my elementary school, I wasn't a star athlete, and as the years went by I got quiet and withdrawn, which I'd hoped would help but it didn't. And if I fought back in even the slightest way, I got punished for 'fighting'. They tell kids to tell an adult... that gets your ridiculed by the adult, and then fucked with even WORSE by your tormentors because now you're a fuckin snitch.

As soon as I started fighting anyone who tried to fuck with me, I didn't get fucked with any more. I figured I was going to get in trouble either way, whether I actually fought or not, and I was probably going to get my ass beat either way, since it was always at least 6 to 1 odds, but godsdamnit I wasn't going down without scoring some hits and making these fucktards feel some pain. And as long as I'm going to be punished for something, I might as well DO whatever it is. High school was a million times better than K-8. And all I had to do was get in a fight or two, and get confrontational with a few other people who backed down when they saw I wasn't going to take their shit and I was ready to fuck them up if they said one wrong word.

All it takes is for the target to fight back. That's it. If the school system would tell kids that, bullying would end tomorrow.

^^That is all the schools would have to tell kids. And then allow the intended victims to fuck the bullies up without getting in trouble.

What would you do if you saw two boys of 6 years wrestling? Their shirts off, red and sweaty, they have a large group of peers around them, cheering, eyes wide and knuckles white. Would you stop them or give the young scraps some advice? Their solution? They suggested that more men be encouraged to teach younger children and engage in rough play with them. Until the late 1800’s, education was male dominated and boys spent a lot of time with male mentors. But, of course, there has been no effort to bring back that environment. Instead, a compromise between boys being boys and boys being fairy princesses was achieved—playing superheroes.
As though female teachers are going to tone down the disapproval as the boys shoot lasers and magic at each other. That’s precisely how I used to wrestle with my brothers and friends as a pup; it was just obvious. If someone took things ‘too far’, they were ostracised from the fun, at least until they calmed down and apologised. If someone got hurt, we stopped, checked whether they were just being a pussy or needed to get themselves mended; we kept calm and carried on.

I was bullied ever since kindergarten even (although not sure the reasons was for that there) . But no doubt when got older, I got bullied for being "different". I was never a easy target though, not physical or mentally, pretty sure I hurt everyone who bullied me more back then they did me, both physical and mentally again. I always fought back. In a strange way though, I think thats kinda why things didn't end for me. I beat up everyone who picked a fight with me, but I truly made them hate me I guess, with words really, but man, all the bullshit they came with, deserved all of it. An in a weird messed up way I became the escapegoat for the entire school too, wasent unusal that like 50 people would name call me everyday.

I was no doubt unpopular, but I was very good at everything so im pretty sure people were jealous a lot. I was good at all kinds of sports. I was the fastest at math, I was good in all subjects etc. Im pretty sure people hated me a lot for that too, even though I never bragged about any, if anyone bragged it was everybody else, lol. About their own achievements I mean. Mine never mattered. Not to teachers either. It was probably further weird in a way that my best friend was the guy who was most popular in school and I was the most unpopular. Everybody loved him for some reason.

I do think though that much of the intial reasons I was bullied was cause of my family really. We have some oddballs and a weird history I guess you can say, in so so many ways too. I think just cause I carry a certain name Im supposed to be hated.

I was bullied through all my years of school. I had no friends until about 13, and some 'mid level' girls befriended me. I don't really speak to them anymore, just because we grew up but I'm so grateful to those girls. They made my teenage life so much more bearable and allowed me to form memories with them. I'm glad to say that they're all really successful. One of them is a registered nurse now. Another is a vet, and the other one is a flight attendant.
I was bullied for everything. My name (which is super unique so I won't share it. I'm probably the only person with this name because my parents made it up lol). My weight. I had a big butt which I wish I had now! I had long hair and kids would start rumors that I was too poor to get a haircut seeing as I didn't come from the most financially secure home. I had food thrown at me from a bus once, because I was chubby. I've even been stalked home by boys throwing rocks at me.
So, i dropped out in year 9. Found a friend at another learning Institute at 18 who taught me how to do my make up and eyebrows and how to dress. Suddenly, people started being nice to me. Boys started looking at me and trying to talk to me. People listened when I spoke.
It made me happy, but it also disgusted me. I am still the same awkward, shy and weird person inside. Just because I look different, people treat me different?
Anyhow, i want anyone who's getting bullied to know that life changes drastically after highschool. Your education is so much more important than how these gronks perceive you. You are more than what you look like. You have so much to contribute to this world and you shouldn't ever feel less than anyone else. We all ho into the same hole when we die. Just try to focus on your life path. Make the most of it and seek what makes you happy. Don't spend a single second doing something that doesn't make you happy. Look after YOU.

"Not being popular in the first place" is a given. When I lived in Kenosha, I was very sheltered, and there weren't many kids in the area to get to know in the first place. So I pretty much had no friends. So when I got to living in Michigan for the first time, I didn't know anyone. And I found myself embroiled in a culture that was very tight knit (and slightly inbred.) As such, I was the outsider everyone treated with suspicion from the get-go.

It took years before anyone would trust me with anything, and that became a cause celebre for bullies.

Also, they could tell by my demeanor that my family was very insistent early on with instilling morals in me. Most of them had parents who were incredibly half-hearted at best about such a thing. The kid who won't do certain things because of a sense of honor they don't have; yields curiosity, insecurity, jealousy, and mistrust. I came from nothing, but carried myself like some kind of paragon compared to them.

They knew they were the farthest things from paragons. So, to ease their own consciences, they became obsessed with bringing me down to their level by any means necessary. "Corrupt the Cutie" became their "sacred" mission.

A lot of them had a**hole parents, so I didn't question where they got their ethics from. They had to shun me, beat me up, put me down, whatever it took, until I adopted moral standards as low as their own. Here I am, 20-some years later, still refusing to stoop to that level. (Though, not completely unscathed.)

You don't always have to be different to be bullied. Sometimes jealousy can cause a bully to attack. The most important thing to remember if you're bullied is to tell family and friends or even teachers what's going on. There is always someone who can help before it gets too far. I was bullied as a child for being shy, but I reached my breaking point and stood up for myself. The bully never bothered me again but that doesn't always work. Just remember if you're being bullied stay Strong and reach out for help, life does get better.

Being a nerdy kid, I got bullied in middle school. it was mainly one guy and I eventually got sick of it and nearly drowned him in the pool. Later, I went to trade school before college and I saw him on campus. He apologized for being an ass and told me his father had left home around that time and he didn't have the skills do deal with it emotionally so he took it out on others. We're friends on Facebook now.

One of my friends got bullied, too. He ended up beating his bully so badly, he had to miss school for several weeks.

Yeah now that bullying is more in the public spotlight, I finally realized that I was bullied also when I was in middle school. It came to the point where I'd be swinging fists at the bullies right off when it happened. They learned to back off a bit I think. Schools (in the USA) should also be held liable as kids are forced to go there by law.

I don't think kids should be held to a different standard than adults.. assault is assault and they should instantly be expelled/thrown in juvie with all the other bad apples.

Bullying is the reason for most of the shootings in schools... and IMHO it justified if "truly innocent" people aren't hurt.

My English was SHIT, as I moved from a Swedish private school in London to a public English school. Plus my class went from 11 students (all friends) to then 30 students in a homeroom with then 3 other homerooms. So many different people. And I was obviously not used to it and bullying was something I barely even knew about, and also to make matters worse I have hearing issues so yeah I was a target. Eventually I bullied others too because being bullied made me insecure, and it all just became a vicious cycle.

Sad fact is if Bullying is such a common thing at school or anywhere else especially online, the students should learn to speak out and the teacher should fend for the weaker ones. The school have a mandatory rule to protect a student physically, so why not, help to set the bully straight if possible?

The school can often become a very unhealthy place to get sick, the parents should able to homeschool them if other alternatives aren't available to them such as moving them to a new school. It's just terrible some parents just let their kids get gradually psychologically damaged like that the predators get rowdy at school.

Since I am petite, people think they could pick on me. So I used my natural ability to grow long nails without them breaking off easily so I could use them as weapons just in case some bitch decided to try me any day of the week.

As an ex-bully myself (now i am strongly opposed to bullying) , i can tell you that we never looked at reasons like this when we wanted to do it. Our only motive was that it was fun (the fact that it is wrong didn't matter a bit to us back then, when we were like 12 or 11) because the kids we bullied always gave funny reactions. They were labelled as losers by us and whenever we picked on them they would do something funny as a reaction and that basically was the only reason why we did it. Now we do realize that we were wrong and i personally would never do that again. I still know some losers but i treat them just like i treat everybody else. And no we didn't need to be in groups - i have done it alone so many times (when i was a kid, not now). We didn't get enjoyment from peoples misery , we got enjoyment from their reactions. Really none of the reasons you mentioned were looked onto when we wanted to do it. Fun was the only motive behind that.

A lot of people get bullied because they give out signs of being aloof or eminent. 3 guys I knew got bullied every day coz they wouldn't talk to folk and thought they were better than everybody else. If your pleasant and agreeable and humble you'll be fine in school usually. Any stuck up attitude and kids will tear you apart. That's life. Humble yourself and treat people with respect and you'll get the same back. For the real nasty wankers who just don't like folk in general, learn how to aim your forehead at the bridge of their nose

Yep. I was also a long time victim of bullies.

First it started in junior highschool (Germany). Man I don't think there was anyone more unpopular or more ghostly than I was. I was perceived as the weirdo, PC nerd, amok runner, the idiot and whatnot.

This got worse when I got to the second half of high school in the 3. th world countries where I am still stranded (not iceland). I was mainly picked as a target because I am a migrant and got called a na zi many times and was told cruel things such as germany having been defeated in both world wars and Germans being weaklings (just because I was underfed).

This all thankfully stopped as soon as I moved into a big city and started college.

I can totally relate to this. When I was in middle school, I hit puberty early. Some girls bullied me mercilessly because they claimed I stuffed my bra. I was paranoid that they were telling people, that people believed them, and that people were going to think I was fake. I came to hate myself and wore baggy clothes to cover my figure. I came around and even though I have a long ways to go in terms of confidence, I can actually say that I like myself.

Can relate, I was bullied for being different and also because people were jealous, this moved from high school right into the work place! can you believe this shit? I tried telling my boss and he just shrugged it off cause he was screwing some the girls there. I was bullied throughout middle school, and it was bad. It REALLY damaged my self-esteem as people would call me ugly like three times a day. And what made is it worse is I didn't let a trusted adult know. My mom wanted me to at least tell the counselor, but I was worried that I'll be bullied some more. And what's ironic is the middle school I want to created an anti-bullying program the year I started high school. As my younger sister is going to be entering middle school this August, I do NOT want her to be vulnerable like I was. If I hear anything, I'm taking her to the counselor's. Bullying is no joke man.
