My ex-boyfriend is a completely different person now that we've broken up. What's changed him?

He did a lot of drugs and didn't care about school, politics, or anything else that was occurring outside of his small bubble of burned out friends. I was the exact opposite: overachiever, love to learn, politics buff, don't do drugs, involved in school, good home life.

After our rough break up and eight months of separation (he was extremely angry with me for a long time), we came into contact and he was telling me about his life right now. He has straight A's, stopped doing drugs, is the class president, attends all his school functions, is mending the broken relationships with his family, and attends political rallies.

What's changed him?

It sounds like he learned about responsibilities the hard way, or someone gave him a wake up call (probably a verbal or physical slap in the face, you know what I mean). Look at his family and friends, who would put him in his place? His dad? maybe an older brother, friend's older brother? mother? The Police? Someone probably did. I know I wouldn't let my brother get like this. I'd duct tape him if I had to, to keep an eye on 'em. Or he realized he had potential to make use of.
