Did You Ever Get Your Mouth Washed Out With Soap As A Kid?

Scene: seated at the dinner table with the family. No cells phones, no tv.. just home cooked food and conversation. I’m around 11 years old.
My Dad asks how was school. My answer was to repeat a new word I had been hearing from the other kids that week. “School Sucks”.
Action Sequence: Mom doesn’t hesitate to stand up and grab me by the arm. I’m directed into the bathroom and positioned in front of the sink as she runs water, puts a fresh ivory soap bar into my mouth, tells me to bite down and don’t move. 2 hours later (~ 2 minutes later) she comes back and removes the soap. Then the lecture begins on bad words and why cursing is not tolerated.
Summary: We don’t curse in my family. The words ‘Sucks’ apparently is a curse word and I didn’t utter it again. Discipline was the norm growing up and now as an adult I fully support discipline.
You described that do well could almost taste the soap, and funny Ivory was my mom's soap of choice as well... And I agree, maybe people think it's okay to behave the way they do these days cuz of no discipline... Know a couple on here that need to eat a bar or two or case of soap 🤣🤣🤣
Yes I did quite often and another popular punishment was to kneel in the corner for hours without pants on rice. So as You can see parents back in the 70's and 80's not only used violence but used their imaginations also to inflict pain and discomfort. I would say the cruelest thing that was done as a child was I was told to go up to My room and My parents would be up later to whip My butt and the waited hours so every time a shadow would pass by the door I'd be scared to death and this went on for hours. I don't remember the butt whipping but to this day I still remember the anticipation of a butt whipping more. The more humane thing would have been to just tear My little keister up because then it would have been over and done.
You were abused as a child. Hope you’re ok now
@lovedejj_xo No the worse abuse was going to 15 different schools which left Me severely handicapped in My ability to form relationships. The ass whippings can be forgotten but the psychological bullshit is never forgotten.
Wow that is so sad that you had to go through this. Did you leave home as soon as you turned 18? I bet you couldn't wait to get away from there.
@ArrowheadSW My mother got married and divorced constantly and honestly step parents don't care about their step kids and if anything the kids are considered luggage. So We moved around constantly or had our schools switched up on us. I went to five different high schools and was never able to have friends so of coarse the bullying took its toll. When My mother got Her finally divorce and She wanted to move across the country We told Her no thanks You can go by yourself and that was at the age of 17 and I've been supporting Myself ever since. I lived through a very bad child hood and as a father I made sure My child lived in the same house and I made sure She went through the same school district so She would have the same friends up until highschool. I even tried to make sure that She had the same mother and father living under the same roof until She was ready to leave and unlike My parents I would have made sure that She learned a trade before She was released into the world. I tried My best and the EX cheated because She wasn't happy anymore. The thing that pisses Me off is the whole time I put Myself last in every equation because My families wants, desires, and needs came before My very own and to be thrown away kind of sucks. The fucked up part is I want to have another family and another child because I at least want to produce one offspring that had a decent childhood and whom when they left the house were a decent contributing member of society.
Wow you've had it rough. So you are saying that you did get married but now you are divorced? How old is your daughter now?
@ArrowheadSW Never married because after seeing so many divorces as a child I just felt marriage was the beginning of the end. I know that's stupid but that's how I felt. I would like to get married now and I don't know if its societal pressure pushing for it or if I just feel ready now to do so. My daughter is 15 and She will be 16 in two months and yeah I'm still staying with Her and Her mother because there is no way I can support two households and I have to get the house out of the way before I move out and get My own place.
So sorry for so you've been through in life... But you've shown through it all that you're a good person and a good father... I hope you truly get the happiness you deserve
*all not so
Life is a learning experience that shapes us all into adults. My friends always considered Me kind of prudish or rigid in certain areas like sex because they never understood the childhood I had. I guess as I child I made a connection between My mothers loose behavior and the fucked up family unit so I grew up into someone whom was very conservative when it came to sex and relationships. It's not that I didn't like sex I just had problems with guilt when there wasn't love involved so I preferred relationships over fun. I do wish I was different and more free but at 47 I can't change and ultimately I just want to be loved for whom I am and that's all. As far as happiness I realized the only thing that will make Me happy is a family so yeah I hope I get another chance to have a wife and kids but time is running out because I'd like to have another kid before 50 because I'd like to at least see them graduate and get married themselves.
🙏🙏🙏
Lol! Yeap... lava soap too. Or whatever soap we had. Soap does not taste good y'all 😂
My mom didn't play with us growing up: said a bad word? Mouth washed out with soap. Talked back to her? Smacked. Did something stupid? Got spanked.
I think your mom and my mom might be related 🤣🤣🤣 same here lol and no, soap don't taste good lol
Once by a neighbor and my mom beat her ass. Then I saw my mom get arrested.
Never seen my mom fight before. She was like a Windmill in a Tornado.
Cuz the Mama Bear came out lol yeah don't ever mess with a mom protecting her kids
Mom went to jail, the woman got a ride ambulance
Shitty part was that she got a year in jail and a police record
System is rigged. If you ask me
Yeah that sucks... But bet if you asked your mom, if she could go back, she's still do the same thing
As a matter a fact. This topic came up the other day.
She says without a doubt.
See... I knew it lololol Mom's might get in your back sometimes... But they'll also ALWAYS have your back!!
*on not in lololol
I knew what you meant lol. We all have tyoeos
Right... I had one on here trying to type peanut butter and it sent p*nis butter instead 🙄😂 still living that one down 😂😂😂
Laughing My Booty Off and Pissing My Pants.

My aunt tried this once, but I decided to spite her by eating the soap, knowing full well she'd have to send me to the hospital. This happened twice before she decided this was a bad idea. This punishment never works as I cuss like the sailor I am today. Also, there is no point in forbidding a child from cussing when it is everywhere. Much better to teach a child why it is bad and how to deal with others who do so. Sheltering a child from bad things does harm. However, like a vaccine, exposing them to bad things in small, controlled by you doses is a smarter approach. That approach teaches the kid responsibility, why the action is wrong and gives enough freedom as a kid that they do not rebel when they become adults and fuck their lives up.
Right I never did that and my kids still will apologize if they say a cuss wired around me lol and they 21 and 23 bout to be 24
My parents never did that to me, but my dad did that to my oldest sister when she was little. I do remember though I did it to myself. Not because I was being bad, but simply because I didn't know what it was like to have a bar of soap in your mouth. I can say that punishment wouldn't work on me, as I seemed to like it.
Lololol 🤣
Yup. As long as I do not try eating the soap I think I'm ok. Not sure why anybody would eat soap though.
🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️
Yes it happened a few times, between 5-10 times for me in total when I grew up. Guess one time why my dad tolerated it more than my mom.
*Hits toe on a table or chair leg, "insert nasty word"*...
Then from my teen years till today pretty much anyone in my family swears. Ohh, by the way all rude words I know is learnt at home, same with my classmates. From first grade of groundschool, till about fifth-sixth any student, swearing got punished, standing in the classroom corner for at least 20 minutes...
Rather stand in the corner than eat soap 🤣🤣 but right.. most kids learn that language from their parents lol or other kids who learned it from "theirs"🤣
Exactly! Very accurate...👀🙄
See even parents are hypocrites sometimes.. Guess we all are in some ways, just some more than others 🤔🤷🏼♀️
Oh yes indeed! Nail right on the head there..🤪
Lolol right 🤣
Oh no!!!😱
Fudgesickle!
Darn!
Manure!
Oh my!🤪🤣
🤣🤣🤣 oh shizit... This is nucking futs 🤣🤣
No they have never used such method. but they use different method
for eg if I have done something mischievous or said something bad to anyone , my parents will give me silent treatment and ignore me
Which I personally don't like but it works in my case.
Sure better than eating soap or getting the belt
Asker What method do you used on your child when they behave mischievous or said something bad?
My kids are grown now, but they either got grounded from watching TV or playing outside or no dessert or snacks or occasionally spanked for more serious offenses... Didn't need to do that much tho...
Yes I got my mouth washed out with a bar of soap a few times. Till the day I just took a bite out of the bar of soap and proceeded to chew it up. The look of shock on moms face was worth it. But in hind sight I should have just let her think the soap bothered me. The new punishment was sitting on the chair with my mouth taped shut.
Yeah that way soap don't sound so bad
What would have been the point when my family were the ones who taught me every single cuss word I knew?
Lol funny pic
My mom did up until I was 10, but it was more for if I said something she didn't like rather than cusswords. She would use liquid soap and I would drink it... Super nasty.
Yeah same except the dish soap, it wasn't just cuss words, I didn't use cuss words as a kid... It was if you were deemed to be being rude or disrespectful
I did hear that saying when I was a kid. "Wash your mouth out with soap". But I had never actually heard of it being done. I thought it was just a saying to keep kids from cussing or talking dirty.
In my day, they said it and did it
Wow... Must've sucked.
Yeah it did
I didn't even know this was a real thing...
My parents joked about it if I said a bad word "you need to wash your mouth with soap" but they didn't actually do it.
Oh it was real back in the day lol and yeah soap can smell good, but don't usually taste so good 🤢🤢
Nope, but when I was 7 I called my dad "asshole" (I didn't know what it meant, I through that it was a compliment) and he putted pepper in my mouth 🤮🤢
Aww that sucks... They used to put hot sauce on my thumb so I wouldn't suck my thumb, that or duct tape
Yikes...
Nope. I was a pretty sensitive kid and my parent's disapproval was enough to send me a message. Besides I didn't mouth off or swear in front of them.
I Didn't either... I got the soap for my sister conning, bribing me to tell her what she was getting for her birthday then when I did she told on me, I got distracted.. I was like 4 or 5 when the happened 🤷🏼♀️
No, my parents didn't elect to use that form of punishment. I had friends who that happened to, though.
Lucky you
my mother was a big believer in physical discipline... i left home as soon as i could. by the way i love your new profile photo
Yeah, I moved out at 17... And thanks.. New age 🙄 new photo lol
Thanks!🙂
I think one time and i cried. It was a school teacher. I told my mom who was the boss of them and that never happened again lol
Aww lucky you... Back in the day, it was parents using that as form of punishment
I think kids started getting sick here so they cut that out quick and made em stand in the corner instead
No.. . Never... Is soap made for eating? Hahahahhaa
May be i did when i was a child... But now i am not like childs to do such a thing...
That was the question..
No parents did as a punishment
Ok that's good!
Nope. I either got smack, whipped, or get my things taken away. I never had soap in my mouth as a punishment! 😌
Yeah soap don't taste so well, but don't hurt like getting spanked with belt, we'd get that too
My mom would put her hand over my mouth and smack her own hand with the other. It didn't hurt but would scare the shit out of me
Hey not a bad idea, specially if it worked lol
Luckily no, I was a angel as a child so I never got punished 😇😇
Angel huh? Lololol
That's good
You sure bout that gurl?🙄
@Chris_u006 omg yes😂😂 I was a good girl
Good good!🙄
What is in my profile picture?
@Chris_u006 ooo I love your pic💕
What, whom is in my profile picture? Two really early Gods
First man and woman in Northern mythology
Only Odin stands above them
My parents threatened it many times but as far as I can remember they never followed through 😂
Lucky you 🤣
Bubbles bubbles yes 1 time then i learn how to run fast lol
Lololol yeah still can't run too fast myself look
Lol not look damn typos
Lol i was over working on my moms car few weeks back and my brother istoped by we were talking and out of the blue we here fuck fuck fuck is that the only word you both know ,,, my brother looked at me I look at him and I said. I now more that that word she said yah right I said I do lol I know go fuck yourvself ain't fucking her. You fuck here you brought her. And your. Fucken kidding me she said that's it ,, in to the house she goes COMES back out with a bar of soap and said who's first. I said fuck that I'm. Not first my brother was on the ground LAUGHING so hard she headed for him and then told me to go get the hose we were in trouble lol
🤣🤣🤣 that's fuuunnny lololol
Never I don’t think my parents knew what that was lmao
That's a good thing lolol
I don't remember my mouth washed out but I do remember being told watch your language
That's good
I did just one time. I didn't mean to say what I did. That f bomb just sort of... dropped.
Like in Christmas Story lolol "Oh fudge"🤣🤣🤣
Pretty much!
That's a real classic too
Right! Love that movie!
Yeah, but only twice. That was enough to dissuade me from cursing.
Yeah it would
A table spoon full of dawn dish soap followed by a mouth full of Castor oil 15 minutes after
Omg that's really bad
You never said hell or damn in front of Grandma or your Great Aunt. The sister ganged up on you
Right.. Or even the neighbors back in those days
Sisters
I had neighbors whip my ass. Then dragged me home. Then mom whipped my ass.
So you got it twice
Right!
Anybody who doesn't know that's Ralphie from Christmas story had a fucked up child hood lol but i got soap in my mouth once for calling my brother an idiot when i was 9
Right! Loved that movie.. Soap in the mouth, not so much
Awesome scene from an awesome movie :) I was sparred that punishment growing up thankfully lol.
Lucky you
Never got the frying pan, wooden spoon or belt
I got the belt but no wooden spoon... I'd prefer the frying pan over the belt... hit a larger area but stung less lol... It would be fascinating to do a study if kids who got the soap treatment, did they grow up saying fewer swear words then kids who didn't... my guy says it had no effect but would be interesting lol :)
No cuz funny didn' event swear then to get the soap... but do swear now 🤣🤣🤣
Guess to make up 🤣🤣
You didn't even have to swear... Once when I was shot I don't know 4-5, my sister bribed me with candy to tell her what she was getting for her birthday, and when I did, she told on me and didn't say she bribed me, she just acted like I tried to ruin her surprise so my mom washed my mouth with soap... 🤷🏼♀️
*about not shot
No, but my late Mom would strike me anywhere she could hit me when I was bad
Aww, sorry 🥺hugs🤗🤗
@Brainsbeforebeauty Thank you, yeah it was rough thanks for the hugs
Anytime 💜🙂
No, I had always assumed that this was just a thing in movies, like never saying "Goodbye" when ending a phone call.
Lololol but no it's real... So you don't say goodbye at the end of a call 😁🤣
Oh okay lolol
LMFAO! Many many times mom was from the old country so she used the old time brown soap Ivory soap was a treat.
Never got the brown soap lol but Ivory soap a treat lololol rather ice cream treat lololol
Never happened to me haha. I never actually swore until I turned 16 so my parents didn't mind. Plus I only swear when I'm by myself 🙂
That's good.. My house didn't have to be just swear words, if was considered rude, or if got caught lying, or tattling,
Oh yikess. That sucks lol
yes.. and my mother at one point made me swallow a full cup of ivory dish soap
Oh yeah 🤢🤮 sorry
it landed me in the hospital, apparently not for internal use means something lol. Glad i haven't spoken to her in 21 years.
Yes not every one who's a parent should be...
No. I've definitely heard of it but didn't know it was a real thing. That's fucked up.
Yeah it was real...
No I never got my mouth washed out with soap, but it was definitely threatened to me
That's good 👍
No my mom just hit me and told me to stand in the corner...
Didn't get the stand in the corner. But spankings with belt or wooden spoon
I meant they didn't do that
Yes it happened. The worst was when my mom couldn't find a bar & used dish soap.
A few people have said that... That's one thing my mom didn't do... She had an endless supply of Ivory soap apparently lol
I agree. Never did that with my kids
I got washing up liquid if I was bad... Scared the shit out of the neighbors dog... Think he thought I must have rabies.
🤣🤣 not funny... But usually we think dogs have rabies so yeah kinda lol... But Susi sucked my mom used Ivory soap
Nope i never did. I was never one to use bad words.
In my house... Wasn't just bad words, it was for talking back, tattling, lying, pretty much anything lolol
I got a slap if i talked back.
So you got slapped a lot 🤣🤣🤣 just kidding 😇
😂😂 i could use a slap rn.
I bet you could 🤣🤣
You offering? 😛😛😂
You trying to get me arrested? Kinda not the way a lady pictures being handcuffed 🤣🤣🤣
Why would you be arrested? Lol
I don't know slapping might be seen as domestic abuse 😂😂😂
I can get us some handcuffs. 😛😛
Yeah I think I once tried soap on my mouth. Maybe I just tasted the soap which smelled so nice.
Whatever I remember a really uncomfortable taste😝
Yeah don't think any soap taste good
That's not a decent way to punish the kids
Oh my kids never got that
That's good👍.
Anyway, if it was a common form of punishment, I can see that it never helped because of the amount of words we see around us
I thought this was just in movies. I don’t agree with that kind of punishment at all.
No that used to actually be a punishment
That’s shocking lol
No, but my dad convinced me to bite a bar of soap once.
As punishment?
🤣🤣I mean that's not a nice trick lolol
yep mouth washed out with soap and hair pulled out of my head face smacked nail marks up my arms till they bled. And that was just when I swore. So think about other times that were worse.
I'm very sorry to hear that 😟
I did... but never suffered blindness from soap poisoning lol.
Not blind, but do need glasses hmm🤔 is that why 🤣🤣
Lolol actually it was Ivory 🤣
What's that? Never heard of that one
I had a very potty mouth as a kid, so yes, it did happened one time. Felt like hell. 🤡
I think my mom was soap happy, cuz way more than once... But it wasn't just swear words, it was anything considered rude to say
Oh yes. I got the soap in the mouth treatment on a few occasions when I let slip a few four letter words lol
Not s good taste is it? 🤢
Right lol
No I never used bad words in front of my parents as a kid
Wasn't always just for swear words in my house... If got caught in a lie, or fighting with sibling or tattling,...
Really you got in trouble for telling on ur siblings
If it was just tattling over nothing just to try to get someone else in trouble yeah
Ohh.
I don't know what era you grew up in to experience that but in my era we have Listerine mouth wash and dentists 🍦
Parents did that back in the day as a form of punishment for swearing or talking rude to people... Not too clean your teeth... Why do all your replies come off like you're trying to insult me? Sorry tho, if you didn't understand the question 🤷🏼♀️
You haven't said it was a way of punishment in your question 😂
If you didn't get that, that's on you 🤷🏼♀️
Maybe I didn't know because I didn't swear at people ☺️ yeah it's on me
See, there you go again... Wasn't just swear words, it was any talking back or if you got caught in a lie... But let me guess, you NEVER told a lie in your life, right,? 🙄🙄
haha i was the quietest kid ever, you couldnt get anything out except a smile or no or okay but if i read a book i read it fast out loud so i could go play again
No I’d probably bite someone’s hand if they tried that
I never swore but I have definitely been smacked several times for talking out of turn.
Yes... lots of times. Lol.
Yeah same..
Yeah, once. Was awful.
Right!
Nope I think this must be a white people punishment like the time out.
Never heard of it until I saw it in a movie and on TV.
I'm white, we didn't get no time out.. We got the belt
Got the soap too... But what does white have to do with it.. and funny cuz if I was saying "a black thing " or an "Asian thing" you and 20 others would be accusing me of being racist... But saying "it's a white thing isn't"... Can we not just discuss anything these days without people making it about race 🤷🏼♀️ I know plenty of black and white people that got their mouth washed out with soap... And plenty of black people that used time out as punishment... It's more snot the times and less bout race...
"about not snot.
Yes and I didn't even mean to swear
Yeah that sucks
Yeap. And liquid soap 🤢🤮
Aww man, liquid soap? That sucks... Mom always used Ivory, and don't think it was always a "fresh" bar 🤢🤢 don't even wanna think where else that bar a soap mighta been 🤢🤢
Yeah that sucks
No, but I was beaten with a belt a lot
Yeah we got spankings with belt or sometimes wooden spoon
Have you ever got that punishment which we had to stay on knees on a bunch of raw corn?
It was horrible and it was very common at my father's childhood
No but I have heard others and users on here say that, but with rice instead of corn
Corn hurts more LOL
I would assume so
Not me. I’ve never had that happened.
Lucky you
Me, never happened. But my older sister did.
Lucky you
Well for one u aren't suppose to eat it I do believe so no I dont believe that has ever happen to me
Who said eat it, parents used to put soap in mouth if you misbehaved
Yes and the belt. But I'm old
Same here... And same here lol
@Rob17792 yeah or incompleted homework, or if got in trouble at school
@Rob17792 okay all that's too much, so sorry you went through that
No I didn't. We had to drink castor oil 🤮
Yeah ewww that way rather the soap
Yes, I never found it very pleasant
Can understand that
