What does workwife mean?

I guy friend of mine says that I am his work wife. Why can't I simply have a label a "friend"?

He says that I'm his bestfriend but I keep him in friend category. I just feel that calling me his workwife is another way of trying to flirt with me. I just feel my friendship is disrespected whenever he flirts.

Because a work wife is more than a friend. Nothing sexual, but usually the conversations are more intimate than you'd have with a casual acquaintance. Work wives will go to lunch with the guy and they will be more "exclusive" than other friend groups.

Yes I'm pretty sure he's trying to flirt. If you don't like it then put your foot down. If he won't quit then is he really a friend? End the friendship/report for sexual harassment if all else fails.

Actually, a "workspouse" ("workwife" / "workhusband") is a common term. My wife taught me it. I have a co-worker, I will call her "K", whom I talk about a lot to my wife when describing my pre-COVID workdays in the office. "K" and I often work closely (and sit near each other) and she comes to me for assistance and we generally look out for each other and will talk about other things after work. Often, we'd be the last two people out the door. Because of this somewhat close friend-relationship, we are each other's "workspouse". (*) And my wife said to me "She's your workwife." I said, "What's that?" and she described it to me having been introduced to that comment by one of her male coworkers.

In reality, "K"'s "workhusband" is her actual husband who is a fantastic guy that I used to work. She is also working in the same program with us which is how I met her. However, "K" and I are both contractors working at the company of which her husband is an employee. We all used to work at the company site but we contractors moved off-site. So, with her husband no longer being around, I filled in the void, so to speak, left by her husband no longer being physically around.

Anyway, don't get too bothered by being called a "workwife". Think of a "workspouse" as being your closest opposite sex friend at work.

"Workwife" basically means if circumstances outside of work were different in his life, he would at the minimal, be dating you.

You feel disrespected because you two don't have the same goals.

YOU want a friendship; he wants more. You have to be willing to walk away from the friendship to stop being "disrespected".

I've had work-husbands before. It's more than your friend, it's someone that you have inside jokes with & are closer to than another coworker.
My last work husband was the dishwasher at a restaurant I worked at as a hostess/busser. We made each others day better/easier in the workplace.
He was a great guy until he started asking me to be his actual side piece, & I really liked his lady.
