I'm not sure that it was ever intended to be angsty or cool. It's simply a case of parents and their kids, or the young and the old, disagreeing with each other about how things should be. The younger generation are trying to find their own path and fighting for their independence. The older generation are trying to impart wisdom and caution and are also trying to remain relevant. It's an inevitable clash of opposing forces.
