Should you pay your friends for helping you out?

I have a friend that's been giving me a hand working on things around the house etc. It's usually a joint effort so it's not like I'm drinking a beer and watching him work. I don't know he doesn't like to think of a friendship as a monetary transaction and I kind of think he's right. Money always complicates things. Opinions?

I just feel he helps me out more than I help him. He just doesn't really ask for help much though. I mean we pretty hang out and I buy him lunch for helping etc. We've been friends forever.

I think he likes helping you out. There is nothing wrong in it, just see if he is a nice guy because looks are deceptive. Some situations tend to get out of our hands so it's better to stop feeling bad if he is helping you. Create a healthy boundary because it is a necessity. But, Don't think about paying him because we are all humans. We all need help. We cannot do all the work on our own. So, stop feeling bad about it.

If you don’t give him money you could offer to pay for Gad when you guys go on road trips or cook him something or get your wife or girlfriend to make him a tasty meal. Maybe order some lobster or steak and have it delivered to his home but make sure he knows about it first and is okay with it.

He didn't tell you, you have to pay him so you're not obligated to give him anything but out of courtesy you can offer him $50 as a gratitude to him.
