When parents hit their adult child, is that discipline or abuse?

I know most people will answer “depends on the situation”.
When parents hit their adult child, is that discipline or abuse?
But in this case of the adult child not being submissive to the parents toxic actions. And the child is calling out the parents behavior. That the parent decides to get physical to show dominance and justify it by calling their actions “Discipline”.
