How to console my dad after an accident? He is very shocked and hugs or words won't work properly?

Question

My dad got in an accident while coming back from park where he goes for walk with a neighbor grandpa every morning. The car is damaged badly. However both my dad and the neighbor grandpa are safe with no injuries. However my dad is very shocked. I tried to console him with hugs and soothing words but he is scared. I guess it's because this was his 2nd Big accident and he isn't used to accidents. I'm worried if his age is doing anything about it. I'm not sure if I should call a man of 47 years old but my dad also have diabetes so I really worried about the blood pressure.

To men in their mid 30's and above (would be best if you are in late 40's as my dad is of 47 years), what would you appreciate from your daughter after getting in a dangerous accident? What would make you feel relieved?

Hey, my mom and little sister were both in an accident earlier this year. They were both ok, but the truck was totalled. My mom was in shock really bad and it scared me. Sometimes all they need is time to process what happend. My mom is in her 40's too with some health problems as well. Just sit with him and remind him that he is ok, and nothing bad happened to him.

My guess is he is coming to terms with how powerless he really is. He may worry about you because of it, but my suspicion is he's mostly thinking about himself. If he's having a "mortality crisis" the only thing you might be able to do is demonstrate how valued he is. Find out what he most takes pride that he might have taught to you and do that a bit.

It sounds like you are a very caring daughter and are doing exactly what you should be. Give him your love and just talk to him, comfort him. He should be better with time, but he might need counseling if he doesn't in time. Glad nobody was physically hurt.

Just give your dad the time to process what happened, we don't process thing like this the same way women do, but make sure that you dad has a check up with your family doctor as the diabetes could be masking something else, and keep your eyes open for signs of whiplash, stiff aching neck, shoulders, back as they could also be masking other injuries, betters safe than sorry.

He is not old. Be sure he is getting proper treatment from a doctor for his health issues. As for the accident, it may help if you tell him accidents happen and he cannot blame himself for it.

It can just take some time. He may be beating himself up over it, sense of pride, scared that it could have been worse.  Just keep an eye on him and see how he is doing.

If I were your dad I would stay away from cars for a while. I don't drive anyway so I'm good on that front. I'm not sure there is anything you can do. He just needs a space to quiet his own mind. Maybe a vacation or something.
