Is it fair for a parent to discipline their child more harshly than they themselves were disciplined as children?

My parents made many mistakes with their children when my siblings and I were kids. The idea that we should be bound to repeat their mistakes is insane.

Yes it's fair. Parents learn from the mistakes their parents made. Maybe they were too lenient with them and so they don't want to do the same.
